Hi all,
I haven't posted anything for the past week or ten days because we've been having server problems. I kept track of emails and read most of the forum postings using a dial-up charge-by-the-minute dongle, but it was too expensive to keep activated for long.
However, John's now got everything back up and running again so I'll try to reply to some of the postings.

Hi Mickey,
It isn't really a photographic term, it's a computer term.
Don't know what it's called in Canada and the US but in the UK a dongle looks just like a memory stick with a similar USB connection on the end.
You plug it into the USB slot on your computer and, provided you're in a good signal area, it will pick up the internet beamed down from a satelite. You have to have the corresponding software on the computer. This comes on a disc in the same box as the dongle.
You pay a direct debit monthly rental fee which gives you a set number of hours per month. If you go over this time you pay by the minute.
They're aimed mainly at business people with laptops who often spend days away from the office and want to catch up once a day with emails and business correspondence.
They work, but they're very slow compared with our usual 24/7 unlimited internet connection from Virgin Media which John feeds into a server for the five people in the house who use it. They also cost just over half the monthly fee we pay to Virgin.
OK for what they're intended for - provided you work for a company that pays for them!

Yep, I call it a dongle too here in the States. Others call it a modem. I pay $60/month for mine with unlimited usage (Verizon). The signal is usually at broadband speeds, but sometimes it crawls at the old and not-so-dear dial-up speeds.
