From our hilltop village we can see Denmark across the water, and about 40 miles
to the south west the steeples, chimneys and cranes of Copenhagen.
We had a day out yesterday to see the lights of the festive season before the climate
meeting starts next week. Two hours by train, ferry and train.
First, a Danish lunch. This is the second platter, after pickled herring:. From
the left, grilled plaice, roast pork, meat balls, liver patty with bacon:
1/60 3.2 ISO400
We stumbled upon a church bazaar, with gift market, refreshments and someone playing
mediaeval Christmas music on a piano:
1/80 3.5 ISO400
The Town Hall Square was cluttered with vehicles, portable buildings and
noisy generators, getting ready for next weeks climate conference. This isn't an
elegant picture, it shows the city tree surrounded by cycle-driven dynamoes,
the idea being to keep the lights going by peddling hard. Right now, the juice
for the lights came from somewhere else. I wonder if they'll be working out
the CO2 footprint of the climate exhibition. The thermometer in the corner opposite
reads +5C, it hasn't been much colder than that yet, except at night earlier
in the week when we had -5C.
1/320 3.5 ISO400
Finally, with dusk closing in, Tivoli gardens and pleasure ground where there no
obvious concerns about CO2 footprints. The whole place was lit up and all the
attractions were working:
1/250 3.5 ISO400
A whole building was filled with mechanical figures in suitable settngs. You
either walked in free at one end, or rode round on a Santa sleigh from the other.
These figures were scaling a mountain ridge with fresh food supplies
(looks lake chanterelle mushrooms):
1/50 4 flash ISO400
Outside, the last light was fading. The pagoda and the boating pond:
