Hi ! Read this in the weekend newspapers: A 1839 Daguerrotype “Giraux” ( made by Daguerre`s brother in law in September 1839 ), the worlds first commercial sold camera will be offered by an Viennese auction house in may. This camera had been in private ownership since generations and was unknown until now. It is also original signed by Louis Daguerre himself. The starting price is EUR 200.000.- but experts estimates a winning bid between 500.000.- and 700.000.- or more. This would be the cream on the cake of every collection. I`ll take a look in my wallet… MIK www.westlicht-auction.com/

I guess brother-in-law wasn't much of a photographer. The camera looks so pristine.
May, huh? Four months. I wonder how much I can save ........

WOW!
THAT IS RARE.
Hmm ... estimated at more than £600,00 ... plus buyer's premium.
I don't think I'll be bidding on this one!

Hi ! Today i visited the museum where the Giraux-camera is displayed as far as the auction will start. If you buy the Daguerrotype, you`ll get also a original manual in German. Here are some pictures: This badge is signed by Louis Daguerre ( on the right ): There is another Daguerrotype from 1839 displayed: A Susse Bros. model: MIK

Sold yesterday for 732.000.- Euro ( incl. buyers premium ). No details about the buyer, but I hope it does not live on in some Asian bank-safe. I would like to see this historic piece displayed at an museum. Mickey, did you win the auction ? MIK

Mickey, did you win the auction ? MIK I pulled my bid when I learned the instructions were in German a language I don't understand. I would probably never have figured out how to use the camera. I might have managed with French. Definitely a lack of foresight on the part of old Louis-Jacques-Mandé. I guess I shall have to stick with Brownies. Mickey

I just watched a mini-series/docudramma called Into the West (1830s-1880s). The heroin of the story met and married an Englishman who emigrated to the United States to photograph the American Indian. They show extensive parts of the program showing the use of this kind of camera and developing the photo plates with a burning chemical. I really got sidetracked when watching this part of the movie and thought of Peter Wallage and his disscussions of this kind of photography. If you get a chance to see the movie, it's really good.
