Hi ! Today the highest building in Austria had been blown up: Two antenna towers for medium-wave transmission ( the higher one: 274 meter ), located at the Viennese city limit. They became a landmark during the years. The transmitter was built by order of the US Army in 1950 and the radiation was in the direction of the Russian occupied zone in Austria after WWII. This transmitting station broadcasted 1955 the first radio program in liberated Austria called “ The voice of free Austria “. It was one of the strongest mid-wave transmitters of the world ( 600.000 Watt ). During the Yugoslavian war in 1999 they reactivated the transmitter to broadcast radio programs against the Yugoslavian regime. Now the towers became obsolete, because almost nobody is listening to medium-wave this times ( except me from time to time with some old German naval receivers, but mostly I`m listening to shortwave programs ). I have been able to see the towers from my balcony since yesterday, now they are gone. I took some pictures at the weekend, and one today in the evening after work. Did`nt see the detonation, but here is a link: Are old technical constructions being worth to be declared as a listed monument ? What do you think about it ? MIK My balcony view last weekend: and today:

I think you have a wonderful view. Communication has changed a great deal since the advent of satellites and the internet. It is very difficult today for any government to shut off citizen access to news from the rest of the world.

My brother still climbs towers like that for his job at an ABC TV Affiliate. I think he would be glad to see his tower go.
