Thanks - all down to the wonders of the motorwinder and automate/photomerge in photoshop (with a little tidying up after, such as using the clone tool).
I am not sure how many frames I had in the sequence (the original files are on another hard drive) possibly about eight - maybe more. It took a little trial and error to sort out the best combination.
The second from the left of the four yellow shirts is actually looking at the second green player coming in, but because of overlap with the first pair of figures I couldn't get it (the second green coming in) to look right no matter how I tried: so I had to remove that figure fully from the equation.
I should have added to the thread title "those who don't like photoshop, look away now!"
