Hi Mickey! The fort is long gone. It was established in 1857 to maintain order on the Noyo Indian Reservation. It was named for Captain Braxton Bragg of the United States Army. He eventually became a General in the Army of the Confederacy during the American Civil War. The reservation and the military complex were abandoned in 1867, and the area was settled by ranchers and loggers. The sole remaining building from the fort is somewhere in downtown Fort Bragg. I failed to find it while I was there. The only military presence in Fort Bragg now is the Coast Guard Station where Mark served Unfortunately, my pics of that part of town are on the missing negatives. Roy

I have only just seen this thread: I'm not sure how I missed it. Roy, I have heard or people being three negatives short of a full film but you have gone better than that! I lost virtually all my photographs, mainly slides, from about pre 1985, so I know how infuriating it is. Anyway back to your pics here. Always enjoyable, is this sort of photos. I see there is a little strip of sand, but it doesn't look the sort of place to try to swim from - and what is the water temperature like? I look it up on google maps later so I can get a better idea of its location. Thanks for posting, Roy.

Hi Roy! It looks very peaceful there, those are nice shots. I just finished a book on the war with Mexico, and Braxton Bragg was a Lieut. in charge of a company of artillery, fresh out of West Point. Maybe they named the Fort after him in recognition for that service.

Doug and Daveh
Thank you for taking a look. It is very peaceful next to the water there in Ft Bragg.
In some areas, people do go into the water, but they usually don't stay too long. The water is c-o-l-d!

Roy and Doug, your Braxton Bragg gets around a bit: there is also a place named after him in North Carolina. Having two places named after you would really be something to brag about.

Hi Dave! He was born in N. Carolina, and really was quite mad. There's a story that while in command of a western outpost (he was quartermaster at the same time) he requisitioned supplies from himself, then denied the request. Angered, he demanded to know why the supplies couldn't be issued. He returned the request (to himself!)stating that the supplies just weren't on hand. Sounds like my kind of guy!

Brilliant. Groucho Marx, Spike Milligan and now Braxton Bragg to add to my heroes. I really like that story. Oh, and Spike Jones and his City Slickers - someone mentioned them on another post but for some reason I didn't comment and then I lost thread.
