Did Zeiss make two versions of this lens? I recently acquired one as part of a Contaflex S outfit and noted that its maximum aperture is F/3.2. All of the literature references I've found so far (including Bomback's 1958 book) relating to this lens state that the maximum aperture is f/4. Other than the obvious is there any difference?

Alan .... I've just checked my 35mm Pro-Tessar, like yours for a Contaflex, and it is f3.2 also. According to Wikipedia the f4 version was the earlier and had a 49mm filter thread whereas the later f3.2 version had a 60mm screw-over filter thread. However my f3.2 version seems to have a 49mm filter thread so it's all a bit confusing.

Rachel..thank you for the reply. I expect that you are right and that the f/3.2 lens is just a later development of the f/4. It seems that the 85mm also exists in the same two apertures. My 85mm is f/3.2 but many references note the lens as f/4. I'm wondering now of the 115mm also exists as an f/3.2 (mine is f/4). I'm curious as to whether there is a difference in design/performance of the f/3.2 v f/4. My 35mm and the 85mm have 60mm diam. filter mounts

Alan .... yes I think that you are correct about there being "upgrades" to all the lenses. I'm sure that the 115mm lens comes in two versions. I believe that the 50mm lens was recomputed and wouldn't fit earlier versions of the camera. I never did manage to find an 85mm lens without separation problems.
I'm afraid I haven't used my Contaflex gear for a long time now.

Rachel..thank you for the additional information. Your mention of the "recomputed" Tessar jogged my memory and I'm sure that I read somewhere or other that the "new" Tessar was introduced with a new version of the Contaflex Super in the early 60s, and I expect te the pro-Tessars were undated at that time. I'm hoping to try out the Contaflex S this weekend if the weather is good.
