I recently bought a 1969 model Canonet QL17. This has the same body, lens, shutter, and rangefinder as the more desirable G111 model, yet cost far less. The G111 has a different battery check, the rewind knob is differently shaped, and the label is different.

Thanks! I have been wondering what the difference is. Sounds like it's minimal..

The Ql 19 is cheaper too when you find one and truthfully you never notice the speed diference.

Hi, New here. Can do a side by side comparison of the Canons. All of the above plus:
Canon G-III was made in Taiwan. QL17 was made in Japan. Viewfinder difference: Only difference is the inclusion of a painted aquamarine segment between f5.6 and f8 on the RHS of the meter scale. Battery test on G-III has own light. Good luck if it goes! Battery test on QL17 shows in film counter window-a great idea. Lens groups identical as far as I can ascertain.

I have the 69 model also. Out of 5 rangefinders that I have (Canonette, Minolta 7s, an automatic focus Hi Matic, Petri 7 circle eye & Kiev), It's the only one that I really like.

Thanks! I have been wondering what the difference is. Sounds like it's minimal.. It also depends on the year of manufacture. The original QL17/19's were much larger and had a 45mm rather than 40mm lens. Here's a pair of Canonets I once owned: Gene

This is why I have only ever owned one Canonet and it was a GIII. So if the QL17 is any better I got to have one

Craig Get behind me thee devils you now have me looking for a QL17. Luckily, as John F has pointed out elsewhere on these pages, Canonets are reasonably common in NZ.

You guys are no help at all! Oly XA--Canonette--Oly--Canonette--BOTH!

Both would be good. Horses for courses. XA is tiny and a good performer but mine has a tendency for flair in the centre of the lens, but no-one notices I am using it. The canonettes produce surprisingly excellent results to my untrained eye. i.e. it flatters my general ability as a hack film photographer.

Re: Battery check differences. The info I posted above is incorrect. The QL17 check is done in the viewfinder and that is the purpose of the aquamarine coloured strip on the meter scale. I found a battery and checked it out. The film counter illumination method is a feature of Yashica GSN. my apologies.. dave

NZ$30 + P&P later and a '69 QL17 is in the post.
You blokes will encourage a fellow...
BTW, can anyone actually confirm the buzz that this lens is sharpest wide open? An interesting prospect!

I have GIII and non-GIII Canonet QL 17's. As mentioned, they are near identical at least from the outside. Additionally to what has been mentioned, on my examples, the "Canon" engraving font is very slightly different.
I'm interested in the battery check feature in the non-GIII. On mine, I see no evidence of a battery check feature at all. Nothing external on the camera, no aquamarine stripe in the viewfinder or anything else. There is no evidence of a battery check feature at all. Am I missing something? Have not found any users manuals on the web for the small, non-GIII Canonet so far.
Regards,
Ed
