Hi All! I mentioned once that I'm a woodworker and was asked to post a few shots of my work. Well, I picked up a new job today refinishing some doors out of a 200 year old farmhouse, and thought it might be fun to share this project with you all. I'll post some before photos and will update you on each step I take as I go along The customer tried stripping one side by themselves which actually makes my job a bit more difficult. More to follow, Doug

Doug, It looks as though there has been varnish which has been painted over - always a difficult problem. We used to have (still have?) a local firm called "Strippers" who for a small (well quite a big fee actually) would strip the door for you of paint varnish or whatever. They had big baths of paint stripper and would just immerse the whole door. Mind you we did have a mass murderer who was happily doing the same thing to people. I am not a woodworker myself, but several in the family have been. As you look at the photo: to the left my grandfather, to the right my uncle (don't know who the one in the middle is) with one of the railway wagons they had been building. Taken probably in the mid 1920s. - I don't know if 1924 indicates the year of manufacture, but it looks about right.

The only problem with immersing something completly in a stripping tanks is it can sometime unglue the joints. That's not aways a bad thing because often the joints should be reglued.

Wayne, You're right, it does loosen up the glue joints. On a door, it's not such an issue, but on a piece of antique furniture, it can make them literally fall to pieces. I'd still like to have one for a job like this. I've estimated that it will take me approx. one week per door. She wants them stained a dark maple color. They also seem to be made of a heavy pine, with lots of resin and difficult to stain. I'm going to enjoy this Doug

Hi! I took care of some paperwork this morning and am ready to take on the door. First things first. I'll take off all the hardware, and put it in a container of automobile brake fluid overnight. That cleans off enamel very nicely. I've already taken the hardware off the other door. If those knobs start flashing, I'll have to lift the door, and get on the radio Second, get off the computer and start stripping paint . I'll post another photo later. Doug

Doug, I am avidly following your project. I am puzzled by "If those knobs start flashing, I'll have to lift the door, and get on the radio " Mickey

Doug,
I never have like that sort of door handle - you can't open it with your foot. Like Mickey, I'm a bit puzzled - were the flashing door handles in some film or other?
This could be a better series than the wonderful Home Improvement.
Dave.

Sorry guys, As I was taking off the door knobs, I got a picture in my mind of the flashing bed knobs from "Allo, Allo". My brain takes very twisted paths at times, maybe there's a detour up there somewhere and I took the wrong turn I've started stripping the one, and am pleased to report only three coats of paint. I was taking a coffee break, now it's back to work. Doug

Doug, now you come to mention the flashing bed knobs, and I shall say this only once, I know what you mean.

Doug, now you come to mention the flashing bed knobs, and I shall say this only once, I know what you mean. Dave. I am still in the dark. If the doorknobs start to flash you pick up the door and stand on the radio? I never saw Star Wars. Did I miss something? My brain is twisted too. Now. Mickey

Mickey, I've been looking to see if it in youtube, but I haven't found it yet. This is the best I can do so far: www.tv.com/allo!-allo!/the-wooing-of-widow-artois/episode/51708/summary.html Dave.
