In the fall of 1979 I went to northern Norway as a journalist covering a NATO exercise there that involved a a squadron of RF4 Phantoms (reconnaissance) from the Idaho Air National Guard. The unit was based at Bardufoss and was overflying the Soviet fleet which was holding exercises in the Norwegian Sea at that time. There were also Norwegian Army units at Bardufoss. They were armed with the German Leopard Tank--at that time considered on of the best tanks in the world. Ill try to post some other Norway shots as I scan them.

I was expecting to see photos of fjords and such like - interesting photos nonetheless.
Did you get up to the North Cape, Nordkapp? It's one of those journeys I've always wanted to do, but probably never will unless it's on a cruise. Norway is very expensive to holiday in. these days.

Bardufoss (Frog River) Norway, 1979 The hotel where we stayed part of the time while there. On Google Earth the area looks much the same today. Looking ober the shoulder of the co pilot of a Norwegian Army Huey helicopter on a flight to Tromso. The pilots were giving us a tastes of “nap of the earth” flying. A street scene in Tromso. It’s hard to think about those kids in the strollers being in their 30s now and their moms in their 50s or 60s

We only got to Tromso and Narwick--about equal distance north and south of Bardufoss.

Before going to Norway I had a Mamiya M645. Decided it would be too bulky so traded it in on an Olympus OM1 and a couple of extra lenses. because it was the most compact 35mm SLR at the time. The Nikon FM was around but they wouldn't give me as much in trade..
It was fall in Norway so it never got very light. In addition I was shooting Kodachrome 64 so I had to shoot just about all my pictures wide open and at pretty slow shutter speeds. When I got back and developed the film I discovered I didn't have any pictures that were really tack sharp. Dumped the OM1 and was never able to get excited about another Olympus camera.

Hi Wayne
I suppose if you had more light and didn't have to shoot wide open, you may have had a better feeling about Olympus.

Probaby, although even the pictures I shot at home seemed soft compared to other cameras--not just the M645

Bob:
I got my first Nikon in 1968. I had three of 'em before I went stupid and traded them in on a Contax RTS. Form the Contax to the 645 to the OM1 to a Pentax RTS. Then I didn't even have a 35mm camera from about 1986 to 2001--my video period --then back to Nikon with a used FM and FE.

Wayne, thanks for showing these pictures ! MIK Yes it did! The reason I went back was our daughter was getting married on Maui and I figured I could afford to buy some equipment, take the pictures myself and still save some money. I was right. W

So it felt good in your hands and in your pocketbook! Excellent! Can't beat that!

Hello, I was researching for any info on older 35mm SLRs and came across this site. Ironically, I was a part of this excercise as an augmentee with the Ohio Air National Guard. Our unit provided the communications for the Air Guard Flying Unit from Idaho. I got to travel to Tromso, Bjerkvik, Finnsnes, and Harstadt. I took a lot of kidding about having my trusty Konica TC. My pictures were equal to or better than my friends who had newer and more expensice cameras. Your post and pix about your experience was very nostalgic for me. I will post back with my pictures from my time in Norway in a week or 2. Out of all my years in the military, this trip to Norway was by far the most rewarding. Thanks, Mike
