Back in the late 1960s when I was a young newspaper reporter/photographer, it didn't really occur to me that significant events were taking place before my eyes. I just liked taking pictures--like these two shots from a rally when candidate Richard Nixon visited Boise Idaho. A test: Can you spot the Secret Service man? I actually have these negatives, however these two shots were made off transparencies made from original prints. In those days we shot everything using Tri-X film. W

There are 3 men wearing sun glasses. Secret service men wouldn't be so obvious - would they?
They must be actors.

There are five with sunglasses on. Ah yes. But only 3 are surrounding Tricky Dicky. The other 2 must be stand ins --- or cautious. Mickey

Randy. Yep, Pat's right there beside him.
I had an interesting encounter with the SS that day. The rally was being held on the steps of the Statehouse. I thought I could get a better shot if I went inside and came out the door to the steps above where Nixon was speaking--the back of his head or maybe a profile with thousands looking up at him.
I had press credentials and no one had given me any problems while I was shooting outside. So I scooted inside, up the stairs and was about 10-feet from the door that opened onto the Capitol steps when three guys in suits and sunglasses put me up against a wall rather roughly and searched me and my camera bag. Even then they didn't let me out on the steps. Coming up behind him was a definite No No.
I also have shot of Robert Kennedy taken in Ontario, Oregon, two weeks before he was assassinated in LA. I don't remember very much in the way of security there. He was shaking hands with everyone.
43 years ago---Wow!
