Hi all,
Haven't done much on my computer today because I caught a bug of some sort.
I was feeing a bit off-colour yesterday and quite suddenly collapsed in a heap on my way to the toilet yesterday evening. John and Wendy carried me to my bed and called the local paramedics who were there within 7 minutes by which time I was starting to recover. I still had a temperature of 103 degrees F (39.4 c) but I could feel it was dropping.
They hooked me up to their portable equipment and did an ECG. They wanted to take me to hospital, but I could feel I was getting stronger and I suspected they just wanted to cover their backs, so I said no, I'll wait for a doctor to turn up first and do what he says.
They called up my medical history on their computer and said, "Oh, you haven't got any history except for injuries and check-ups over the past 10 years. That means either you haven't bothered to go to your doctor or you've kept pretty healthy."
They called the duty doctor, ticked the boxes on the form they left for him to say I was capable of rational speech and rational thought and was being unco-operative.
The duty doctor came quite quickly, looked at the EGC printouts, took my temperature which by now was down to 99.8 dgrees F and did some prodding examination asking if this hurt or that hurt.
They didn't, and he said he didn't think it was necessary for me to have an emergency admission to hospital. He went out to his car and brought me back a 10-day supply of amoxycillin anti-biotic capsules and paracetamol which I have to take three times a day. (I'm allegic to aspirin, ibuprofen, co-codamol and most other pain killer and temperature reducing type drugs, but thankfully OK on paracetamol).
I slept well, and I gather that John, bless him, sat with me most of the night to make sure I was OK. Little Luke was very concerned and was in to see me bright and early this morning to satisfy himself I was OK.
The paracetemol had brought my temperature back down to normal by this morning and the amoxycillin seems to be doing its stuff but I've got to complete the 10-day course.
The visiting doc wanted me to see my own doctor, so I'll phone him tomorrow. He'll probably want me round at his surgery to do a blood test. If I carry on improving as I am I'm hoping it will show normal, but he's been my doctor for nearly 40 years since he was a junior doctor in the practice which is the largest in Ashford and has about 10 doctors, some of whom are consultants at the local hopital. He is now a senior partner. I trust him so I'll do whatever he suggests.
In my own mind I'm on the road to recovery, but it was a sharp reminder to be careful because I'm not getting any younger. At 82 I can't just shake things off and carry on like I used to be able to 40 years ago. Tomorrow I want to see if I'm strong enough to have shower. I need one!
