Some of you may remember me taking this photo of the old Conneaut/Cleveland Hotel a few years ago with my Speedex. I just found a photo of the same building that was taken about a hundred years ago.

I hadn't seen your original entry, Randy. The pair make an interesting 'before and after'. Your black and white photo makes it look as though there is not much life left in it. In its time it was quite an attractive building. Is it still standing?

It was an apartment house for around 50 years, and fell into disrepair. It is now being restored by the local historical society. George Burns and Gracie Allen slept there, as did Bob Hope & Bing Crosby. There used to be a theatre where personalities would preform nearby. Mickey Rooney was one of the people that suggested the restoration.

Burns & Allen: one of the great comedy partnerships. Mickey Rooney: a child star with "Our Gang".
It is always good to hear that buildings like this are being saved.

Randy,
The B&W photo is not an impressive building but the old one, which I presume is hand coloured, possesses a certain elegance and majesty.

Randy, It's good that they're restoring that building, something that should have been done years ago. Have you heard what they'll be doing with it? A lot of great old buildings were torn down in the name of "urban renewal" back in the 70's. At least the ones that survived are starting to be renovated.

From pauloberman.ca Excerpt from speech to Architectural Conservancy of Ontario.
Paul recently wrote an article for Teknion’s Design is Intelligence Made Visible. I will leave the last words to him:
“Historic buildings integrating old and new are, for me, the lifeblood of a city. If we don’t care about renewing our historic buildings, if we don’t care about preserving them by finding new uses for them, what will we care about? How will we create a vibrant urban environment consisting of exciting and remarkable built forms if we turn our backs on the great achievements- and even the mere survivals- of our past? If we don’t value our heritage, how will we create anything of value in the future? A desirable future, I submit, is tied to our past.”

It still has the same bones.
With a little taste and some expenditure of money and effort it probably could be returned to its former elegance and made into a showpiece of which the neighborhood and the municipality could be proud.

Burns & Allen: one of the great comedy partnerships. Mickey Rooney: a child star with "Our Gang". Dave, Although Mickey Rooney used three names - Born Joe Yule Jr., Mickey McGuire and Mickey Rooney, none of them appeared in the Our Gang films. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Our_Gang_personnelThere were three Mickey's in those films over the years but none of them was a Rooney. No. I wasn't one of them either. Mickey

Mickey,
Yes. I was actually thinking of Jackie Cooper (who was about the same age as Rooney) from Our Gang rather than any of the other Mickeys - but somehow transferred the accolade to Mickey Rooney.
Dave.
