Thanks to the generosity and wisdom of our federal government in spending our tax money wisely - that is, giving me a decent refund - I did it. I bought a Pentax K-5 today. Body only. It is quite a machine. I have a lot of learning to do. Just getting the strap on was a serious challenge. Mickey

Mickey,
Get learning! I shall be testing you on it next week.
Each model seems to improve on the previous one, particularly where noise levels of high ISO is concerned. I bet your K-5 is better at its highest ISO than my old istD is at its limit.
Enjoy it.

Dave, Mickey,
"Get learning! I shall be testing you on it next week."
YESSIR. "Each model seems to improve on the previous one, particularly where noise levels of high ISO is concerned. I bet your K-5 is better at its highest ISO than my old istD is at its limit."It is certainly much better than my K100D at 800 ISO. Back to the book. Mickey

I took my new camera to Edwards Gardens, Toronto's horticultural park, today for a test run.
The camera was superb. It has a mind of its own. I failed miserably. I didn't know how to get it to do what I wanted. But it sure managed to do some unexpected things.
Back to the owners manual. K-5 class 102.

I did it again! It is now 2 am 22 May 2011. I survived the end of the world. How are you folks faring? Despite the calculations of Harold Camping, whose mathematical skills are even worse than mine, the apocalypse didn't happen as far as I can see. Now I shall have to pay for my new camera when the Visa bill arrives. Ah well I can't win them all. Mickey ;D

I was going to fill up with gas Saturday but decided to wait until today just in case the predictions were true. No sense spending $80 if you aren't gonna have a chance to go anywhere. Now I have no option but to get gas.

Wayne,
You and I seem to be on the same wavelength.

"Mickey, are you getting more used to the camera now? When will we be seeing some of the results?"

"Mickey, are you getting more used to the camera now? When will we be seeing some of the results?" Dave. Yes I am, Dave. But it is overwhelming the variety of things it can do. There is an antique airplane and car show here this weekend. That should put some of my basic K-5 knowledge to the test. Mickey

Compare and contrast the modern SLR with, say, a box camera from the 1950s. The one I remember had one lever (Instantaneous and Bulb), one button (shutter release), one knob (wind-on), one window (frame viewer) and a catch to hold the back on. Mind you, loading and unloading the film was more difficult than changing a memory card.

Quite true, Dave, But hand me a camera that is 150 years old and I will probably figure out how to operate it in 5 minutes..... Or less...... Without a manual. Mickey
