Hi All! My computer had a VERY nasty virus, and the only way the techs could remove it was to nuke my hard drive and reinstall windows. Luckily they only charged me 60 USD to do the job. I'd like to catch one of the idiots who develop these things in a dark alley sometime Anyway, I'm back. Did I miss anything? Doug

I have rarely heard of any of these sadistic cretins being caught.
When they are they receive 2 lashes with a wet noodle. The punishment never fits the crime.

I will agree that it would really anger me too and it has, lost a HD that way too. Talk about a misuse of intelligence these hackers are. If you are that smart, screwing others up just because you can is at about the level of pulling wings off of flies IMHO and proves nothing. Just wastes of skin these hackers who could better employe their talents elsewhere to positive effect IMHO. I did say this really angers me. Mickey has it right too that in the unlikely event that they are ever caught the punishment rarely fits the crime. I now have a backup HD with everything on it so if one goes TU I can at least keep going without having to reinstall everything. Sort of like putting a home alarm in after a B&E. Did that too. Good that you are back Doug and I hope you never have that trouble again.

Doug, I'm glad to hear that you your computer are is well again after your its bug.
I've been away from the keyboard too - but on holiday.
Always backup everything that needs to be kept. I have religiously done that and still lost files. Recently I have had a 500gb hard drive "go down" and I realise there are photo and video files from June 2009 that I don't have copies of (or at least I haven't found them if I do have them.) I am hoping the hard drive will burst into life just once so I can get at the files.
The worst "viruses" are those that come from companies that say you have 2,234 faults which they will sort out if you send them £200 or whatever. An Indian company has just tried this on my wife's laptop. A thorough search came up with a few irregularities, but nothing of note.
I have long been in the habit of wiping and reloading my master drive - even in pre-internet times. Drives fill up with garbage and I have yet to find a programme that completely removes all the said garbage. On one occasion Windows could not even locate 10gb of rubbish - even a full Windows format didn't wipe it. That heavens for the little companies.
