'Being born and bred in Arnhem he has a photographer develop them. How amazed he is when it turns out the photographs depict city scenes of Arnhem that had just been liberated.....'
Amazing story about lost rangefinder pictures from liberated Arnhem, Dutch frontline city during allied 'Operation Market Garden', 1944. Super photos. I always wonder how many other such bundles are still waiting to be found - and how many just get chucked in the waste bin.
I knew someone who claimed to be the first into Arnhem. He was in Armoured and they went out on one of their patrols and found themselves in Arnhem. I'm not sure if this was the actual liberation or whether when they realised where they were they beat a hasty retreat with the city being taken later by the proper liberators. He is not around now to ask. Looking it up, it was another battle where the Canadians were much involved.

Hi Brichma! I almost missed this one, but am glad I didn't. I lived in Germany for many, many years (Wuppertal, NRW ), and would drive to the Netherlands at least 3 times a month. I absolutely love Holland, and even thought of moving there at one point in my life. I found the people to be very pleasant, friendly, and laid back ( an Americanism that I can't really explain ). They didn't get along too well with my German friends though. I think I can understand why. My favorite town was Venlo, mostly because of the market, but I did visit many other places. That being said, I know very little of Dutch history, other than that they were the first settlers in NY State , where I'm from. I must say that the photos got me interested in learning some more about your land and it's history. Thank you for the posting Oh yes, I drove a DAF for many years as well, a model 33 ;D Doug
