I am interested in locating drawings, photographs, advertisements, samples, etc. of camera sling systems that were in use prior to 2007. My understanding is that these were somewhat commonly used in the 1950's and 1960's on both still and movie cameras.
If you can provide some information or leads, or have examples of these sling type straps, please contact me.
Thank you in advance for your help.

I have one camera bag, a Lowepro, which has a sling action to it. There is a single main strap and then a side- chest strap. The theory if that is you undo the latter strap the bag can be swung round form you back to your front and then the pockets can 'got at'. I don't know if that is the sort of thing you had in mind. It came just about free with a camera package (probably when I bought the Pentax *ist DS).
By the way, welcome Tom.

I have a LowePro Slingshot bag which I used on a trip to China in 2008 carrying a Nilon D300 and several lenses and flash. I found it to be the best bag I have ever used for traveling as I could get to lenses without taking the bag off as I would have had to do with a backpack bag. We're going on a European river cruise at the end of October and I wouldn't take any other bag. When you need something from it you can just swing it around in front at the perfect height to get to cameras or lenses.
These LowePro sling bags arent from the '50s or '60s however. I don't remember any bags of that sort back then.

I, too, have the Lowepro Slingshot bag. It carries my Pentax K-5, Pentax DA 12>24mm, Tamron 28>80mm, and a Quantaray 70>300mm lenses plus a respectable selection of accessories. That's a lot of stuff. Swing it around in front and it is like a small table that enables you to change lenses without having to lose touch of any of your valued possessions. I have modified the separators not because of any deficiency of the bag. I just prefer to customize the interior. I used 1/4" closed cell foam cut from a sleeping pad used by campers. It acts as a shock absorber, insulation and it never crumbles. It is easy to cut with a scissors and glue with contact cement. Mickey

Hey, Mickey, mine hasn't got a snazzy blue interior.
I presume we are barking up the wrong tree with are LowePro bags. A the back of my mind I seem to recall some sort of system from several years ago but I have no picture in y mind of it. There was a sort of holster system, but when that dates from and what it was like I'm not sure.

Thanks for your comments. Actually, I am looking for information on a sling style strap (pre-2007) specifically to attach to the camera. Sling bags are not what I am looking for.

Must be talking about ever ready cases--the front part swings out of the way to shoot. Almost all cameras once came with them. It has been my experience that on cameras 20 or more years old the cases are falling apart--usually because of rotted stitching.
We usually call them "Never Ready" cases because by the time you get them open the photo opportunity is gone. The one good thing is that the cases protected many old cameras from damage while they were in storage for many years.

W, If you were using a rangefinder camera that front part would surreptitiously cover your lens while you were shooting. If that front part was removable you would be sure to lose it. It was probably responsible for today's overuse of profanity. Mickey

Tom, are you looking for the type which hold the camera close to your body, and eliminate the loose swing of a neck strap? If so, I always made my own, initially for binoculars to keep them from banging into a rifle-----(back when I used to be a shooter.) When I started doing my shooting with a camera, they were just as useful. If this is what you are looking for, maybe I can help.

Hey, Mickey, mine hasn't got a snazzy blue interior.I had a choice of blue or blue so I picked blue. There was a sort of holster system, but when that dates from and what it was like I'm not sure. You must be thinking of the holsters used by Hopalong Cassidy and Wyatt Earp and The Lone Ranger for them thar six shooters, podnah. Mickey
