The picture below is a scan of a Polaroid picture taken at a Boise camera store in 1963. The subjects are me (right) and my buddy Don (his mom always called him "Butch"). We were seniors in high school and looked pretty sharp in our white trench coats which were all the rage in those days. Don wasn't really into photography so I'm not sure why he was with me in the store.
Don was one of my closest friends from the time he moved to town at the beginning of the seventh grade, until we graduated. His parents owned the local grocery store and my folks ran the weekly newspaper.
After we graduated Don and I went different ways but we both lived in the same area so we bumped into each other every few years.
About two weeks ago Don's wife called to tell me he was having some health problems and was in a nearby nursing home. I went in to see him several times and he still had his same sense of humor, We talked a lot about the old days and his memory for those times was as sharp as mine. I brought him a copy of this photo.
Don seemed to be getting better but about mid week he suddenly got worse. Wednesday morning he dropped into a coma. Wednesday evening he died at age 66.
I'll miss Butch
