In Britain post war Ilford was always a big name for film, paper and chemicals. The company has had its shaky spells but seem now to have carved a nice niche for itself in the market since being bought from the receivers in 2005. www.ilfordphoto.com/home.asp It's a good website for black and white photography. What is confusing is that the Ilford name is also used on the excellent Galerie series of digital printing papers, though these come from a different company.

By pure coincidence I went into a charity shop today that had several cameras, though nothing of great note. There was, however, an Ilford manual of photography from1958 for £3 in good condition, so I bought it. It gives a good technical, theoretical and practical rundown of photography of fifty years ago. there are several pages of formulae for developeers, fixers, hardeners, reducers, toners etc. One or two of the chemicals might not be available - especially for some of the intensifiers which call for cyanide and uranium salts, as well as 'milder substances' like mercuric chloride and silver nitrate.

Thanks for the Ilford site, I still use Ilford chemicals, films, paper, etc for all my B & W work.

Col, I could ship some paper out to you if that would be cheaper. I suspect, though, that the size (and weight) is the reason for the cost. Perhaps I could cut it up to make the package smaller and then you could reassemble it your end.

The Ilford proucts that I use can be easily obtained from my friendly photo shop, a wait of about 10 days after placing orders, so I guess there must be a big Ilford agent in France.

What is confusing is that the Ilford name is also used on the excellent Galerie series of digital printing papers, though these come from a different company. What is really confusing is that Ilford Photo also make Galerie papers: light sensitive Galerie paper - Ilford Photo Inkjet Galerie paper - Ilford Imaging.
