Hello! I am excited to find this forum. Growing up and struggling to make ends meat while photographing odd jobs I never had the money to collect the cameras I really wanted to , then I grew up and started a family and put my collecting wants on the back burner until i started sorting through eBay . I am now buying all the cameras my heart desires. One camera that I have fallen in love with is the Argus Cosina STL , not the STL 1000 but a plain STL. I started collecting argus cameras in college when a girlfriend have me a mint c3 she found in her attic . I have a few questions on the STL as to where I can find new foam for the mirror padding and other new material that would fall apart over time. I also cannot seem to make the light meter work the way the manual states by pressing down on the switch to activate the meter system . It seems to work because it moves when changing shutter speeds on the selector but does not change when the fstops are changed and when you press the switch to on it only stops down the lens even when the lens is in auto selection. The manual does not have any trouble shooting sections and I can't figure out why it would be working this way. I just bought a Pentax spotmatic as well which seems to work exactly like the STL so when it is shipped here I can compare I hope.
Thanks to all and I really look forward to talking with everyone on this forum.
Josh

Welcome Josh, Perhaps this will give you the information you want. It is from Henry J. Gambino's excellent book "Argomania". As for seals, try this: www.kyphoto.com/classics/sealreplacement.htmlThis should get you to Jon Goodman. A good man with whom to deal. Always helpful. Mickey

Josh,
Welcome.
There has been a thread or two on foam and suchlike - one fairly recent. (I haven't time to search it out at present).
Dave.
Mickey has added the one link since I started to post.

If you are handy, you can make your own foam seals with a sheet of craft foam and an xacto knife. A sheet of foam only costs a dollar or two and will fix a bunch of cameras. Otherwise, you can get precut kits on ebay for around $10 each.
The meter problem may just be dirty switch contacts.
I have an Argus/Cosina STL1000, and some C3's.

Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome! Regarding the image of the literature , I am assuming from what it states that the light meter needle should move with f-stop changes but maybe I'm wrong. I can only get the needle to move while changing shutter speeds and it has a 1.4v 675 battery zinc air. I'm going to buy some weincells soon though. It looks like all of these older cameras need some foam replaced. I just got my spotmatic in and need to hunt for a battery for it now. Thank you for the link btw!

Hi Josh:
Welcome to the forum.
You shouldn't have any trouble finding a battery for your Spottie. The Spotmatic has a "bridging" circuit that regulates the voltage. It will operate quite happily on modern batteries. I prefer silver oxide batteries in mine because of the flat discharge rate. Alkalines drop in voltage from first use. My Spot F works perfectly on silver oxide batteries.
Enjoy that fine camera!
