Hi ! Since years I have an unusual shaped flashlight in my collection: the “Existence” 769646 D.R.G.M. I took a look at the net recently, because this is one of my items, to which I could not find a manufacturer. I was surprised that all the people think this is a 45 pen-gun. It is not ! The “Existence” is a so called “ sport-flashlight”, as mentioned in the operating instructions below ( unfortunately in German ). It had been produced in Germany, because D.R.G.M. means “ German Empire Patent “ and the patent-number indicates that this item is from 1922/1923. The instruction manual announces this flash as an “ epoch-making “ invention, “ if it is raining, stormy or snowing, Existence gives sun at any time “. You have to set the aperture as listed and adjust the shutter to “time". Load the Existence with a flash-capsule and pull the button after you lifted the item. You will get diffused sunlight and the exposure is free from shadows. Never used it in rooms without protective cap, otherwise you will burn the ceiling. There is also a warning: The flash-powder-cartridges may only be used with the flashlight, otherwise you`ll be in trouble with the police ! Must have been a dangerous way to get flash exposures MIK

That looks ingenious.
Weren't all flash systems dangerous at that time? Burning magnesium openly?

I wonder how many photographers were still in existence after using it.
Fascinating stuff, MIK.
