Hello everyone, just picked up a new camera today at a garage sale (today is an annual 200+ garage sale in Blaine MN.) It is a Minolta Hi-Matic S and paid $2 for it, cleaned it up a little and works just fine. Anyone have or have had a camera like this? Is this the right area for this post? Andy

"Is this the right area for this post?" Andy, i don't know as I tend to just use "Latest Threads" so I never really look what section things are in.
As regards the camera, I haven't got one but if I saw one for $2 I'd certainly buy it.
Dave.

I guess what I meant to say was, is this considered a rangefinder, P&S?

If you can focus it like a Leica then it is a rangefinder and if the viewfinder is only for framing then it is viewfinder. You can't go too far wrong at 2 bucks. Been a long while since I have used my Minolta Hi- Matic E but recall being suitable impressed with the lens.

I guess it is a viewfinder then as you cant really tell what is in focus (by that I mean everything is in focus, plus no rangefinder patch), just have to rely on the distance scale.

You got it. People turn expensive Leica rangefinders into viewfinders everyday by using zone/hyper-focal focusing. Not saying this is wrong and it is a very useful way to use a Leica but you basically have a super expensive P&S that is pocket able.

Andy, I have a Chinese clone of a Minolta Hi-Matic SD, a GanGuang JG304C. Impressive name, cheap camera It's pretty close to what you have and I only paid a buck or two. It has the "zone" focus symbols, so while not exactly a P&S, it's not a rangefinder in the classical sense either. An odd little camera that's fun to use. I'll post a photo in the morning. Doug
