This is another of my finds from yesterdays flea market. I put new batteries in it and nothing happened, but the chamber looked clean so I took an old ink eraser and cleaned the contacts, re-inserted the batteries and it sprang to life. Paid a whole 1 dollar for it Doug

For old battery contacts that have lost the nickel finish, or have been corroded and cleaned, wipe with Petroleum Jelly,(Vaseline B.P. in UK). Petroleum jelly conducts electricity and keeps the air and damp off the contacts. There are of course pro electrical contact greases, but Vaseline is likely to be easily available in most homes. The XA was a decent camera, it main problem was getting dropped, (small), and batteries rotting. Stephen.

And they used to be expensive! Paid € 70 for a working one, 4 years ago; never regretted though. A bit vignetting, but o so handy! Hans.

I got mine for a dollar, too. It was in a pile with some cheap plastic P&S cameras.

XA may be the best pocket 35 ever made.

You got a great deal. I hope you enjoy using it. The Olympus XA has become a cult camera - much like many of its other cameras.

The only thing I don't like is the shutter button is too sensitive. I've taken a few shots before I was ready by feeling for the button.

I use to lust after those. Way above my pay grade (at least circa 1983). I have a XA2, but it's not the same. I will have to buy one sometime.

I had an X2 and then found an XA. The images produced by the XA seemed to have more "snap." Or maybe it was just my imagination.

How reliable are the XA's today. They are great cameras, and have sharp lens, how can one buy a copy in good working order? Are they possible to buy refurbished?

They are typical of cameras with batteries, make sure the batteries have not rotted in place, and clean up the contacts with Vaseline or equivalent electrical cleaner grease. Small cameras in general suffer more from drops, bad handling, storage in hot cars, the XA did have a reputation for being more easy to damage being plastic. Not difficult to get serviced, but will be costly these days in comparison to the cameras value. There are lots around and you should be able to source a decent working example.
