I have tried to get some light seals as the camera is leaking light. No one seems to provide Complete sets to this camera. Do I have to make this myself, or does some of you know where to buy?

1.00mm,1.5 mm, or 2.00mm black felt sheet should work, cut with very sharp scissors, or a scalpel blade to make the strips, glue with a water based PVA glue. Most craft shops or Ebay can supply the felt. Use thick enough to compress slightly when the back door is closed. Do check the door is not warped, and bend it straight if it is. The contact versions of the PVA glue are easier to use, apply thinly to the body and thinly coat the felt, let it dry off a bit, and then gently press into place, with a toothpick or match for the grooves. In the large craftshop I get stickybacked foam and felt, the foam is 'Fab Foam' and it comes in A4 sheets which are 1.5mm thick, which is a little bit thick but it compresses nicely. The felt is also sticky backed, A4, and about 1mm thick. Using a good rotary cutter I can cut 1mm strips of foam easily, the rotary cutter doesn't drag on the foam or the felt and makes very accurate cuts. I peel the backing paper off as I apply the foam or the felt and it's easy to apply. I make the foam strips over length, put them in, then trim to length with a scalpel or scissors. I use the felt for mirror bumpers as well. If I think I might want to slide the felt to position it I just lick the sticky surface lightly to moisten it, apply the foam and slide it into place, then the moisture dries out and it sticks firmly. I've done all of my cameras like this now and it takes me no more than an hour to clean the old gunk off and fit the new seals. and it's cheap, the sheets of foam and felt cost about 70 Pence. They also come in different colours, I bought some sheets of bright red the other day, which should look nice.

Thanks for the replies. I should have enclosed some Pictures, maybe there are some other problem, due to the inconsistency of the problem. This image is normal, as several others.. This Picture represent several of the 20 test shots. Some of the images looks like this. Complete white on the left side, With other light disturbing the rest of the image.

I had problems with my Zenit E after I adjusted the speed either before or after winding the film (it was 40 years ago and I cannot remember which the manual said to never do) which was very like that last picture. Caused by shutter blinds no longer moving smoothly and was only a problem at 1/500 sec.

I did examin the camera, and looking through the viewfinder when exposing showed some strange light appearing. The Mirror foam looked very worn, so I replaced it. No more leaking after developing the test shots. Thanks for replying.

I think that's the second shutter sticking.

Yes, it may be the camera has been unused for a long time, and the mechanics fails. Here is one of the test shots after replacing the Mirror foam, allimages looked like this - no leakage.

Hello Truls, I remember that Zenit E's (EM and B as well) do have problems when the shutter speed is adjusted before winding on, something to do with the speed selector moving when the shutter lever is advanced. As to the light seals, the Zenit's I've had have velvet at the hinge and catch end with a cord material in the grooves, black wool twisted and glued into position could be used as an alternative. The wife gets a waxed cotton cord from jewellery suppliers that looks and feels very similar to the original lights seal material used in Zenits and Prakticas, I just haven't plucked up the courage to try it out on a camera yet. Regards Martin

The general rule of Soviet era cameras with Leica type shutters if ALWAYS wind the camera before changing the shutter speed. There are some exceptions to the rule but it's just easier to always wind first.

I mentioned about a waxed cotton jewellery cord in a previous reply. Well I ordered a generic seal kit off evilbay the other day. The 30cm of cord provided in the kit is the same as wifey's jewellery cord, available in different thicknesses at about 1 pound 75 from jewellery suppliers, I know where I'm getting my light seal cord from now on.
