I popped into our local discount shop (where everythings a pound) and found a tray of Agfa Photo Vista Plus 200asa 35mm film. As I've just redone the light seals on my Yashica FXD, I thought I might as well use a cheap film for a trial rather than wasting a roll of the good stuff. Has anyone used this film and is it any good? Regards Matty

Hi Matty! Don't know if I'd consider Agfa film "cheap film", rather good film for cheap in this case I haven't used that particular type, but have used a lot of Agfa film in the past. Mostly slide (CT100) and B&W (Agfapan). I always got good results. They had a very distinctive look to them. Great find! Doug

I buy a few rolls every time I pass Poundland - I have twenty-odd rolls of it at the moment. The film might well be cheap but it is not nasty - it is made by Fuji. I get it developed and scanned at Snappy Snaps for £5.50 so total cost of 36 exposures is £6.50 - not at all bad, I think.

Back in the day I shot more Agfachrome than Kodachrome. I liked the warm tones that went more to browns while Kodachrome went to blue. Unfortunately Agfachome slides haven't hel up as well as Kodachrome.

But Agfa is at least one of the less companies left, who is still producing ( 35 mm ) color slide film. The Agfa CT Precisa, I just used recently, is surprisingly excellent even cheapest.

I think the point that Wayne was making is the long term stability of Agfa, and all related reversal slide processes, Ektachrome, Perutz, Orwo, Fuji, etc., all leave a few contaminants behind in the structure of the layers by the nature of the processing. these cause ageing effects. It varies a bit by make, the makers fiddled with Agfa's ideas over the years. Kodachrome on the other hand was a dye additive process, and leaves only dye on gelatine, and only light or heat causes the dye to fade or alter.
I don't think Agfa is still making any stock since the break up of the company, the German holding company is branding Fuji as Agfa for some markets. However there is Dutch production of items for Rollei, and others, from an old Agfa plant.
Slide sales are at an all time low now, and are certain to end before negative film production finally ceases.

I have half a fridge full of Vista. It is made for northern hemisphere conditions I was told (need a 2nd opinion) but the colours seem rather washed out in our NZ light. Contrast not so good either but it may be a function of the age of it (expired). I prefer Fuji.

The current Agfa Vista is definitely Fuji brand film, confirmed by the film Processors, but exactly which type is the open question......

Supply of Agfa seem to be a bit strange at the moment, my local Poundland (Holyhead) consistently has 36 exp in but the stores in Bangor and Llandudno only ever have 24 exp. Anyway, I've been very pleased with the results so far. Matty
