This image is near the front of the Renaissance Center, GM's World Headquarters in downtown Detroit. That's the Detroit River and the Windsor, Ontario, Canada shoreline in the distance. It was taken with my "new" old Mamiya 35S rangefinder from the roof of the parking deck across the street. GM flies the flags at half staff every day that American casualties are announced in Iraq. I've seen them this way dozens of times and, for some reason, just had a chill looking at them this particular morning. Pardon my language, but war sucks. You can get a sense of scale for how large the flags really are by looking at the man walking in the lower left of the frame. Film was a Kodak 200 and the exposure was f/8 at 1/125sec.

The American flag, and especially at half mast, has always choked me up...something men they say are not to admit.
I agree with you, Ron, that war sucks. And without going against anyone elses feelings, or getting into politics...we need to quit trying to save the world and filling the coffers of big business and already wealthy politicians.
Sorry for the outburst, folks!

A moment well captured. I remember in my Army days running the flag up the pole and backing down to half-mast far too many times for my liking, definitely not something I enjoyed doing.
