Hi Ron,
I keep a separate camera (FC-1) ready with a B&W film for those moments when you know that a scene is 'right' for B&W. To be honest, I haven't had massive success - due mainly to the fact that you need a different 'eye' for B&W, and I haven't developed that eye to the extent that I have with colour. So the idea that you can convert colour to B&W is appealing.
But... I don't think that it's worked here, because the scenes aren't 'right' for the B&W shot in the first place. Not sure that I'm expressing myself - this is obviously very subjective.
For the first shot, I would have got exactly the same shot as you did, but - I think that this is one instance that is crying out for a sharp ND grad on the skyline. (I don't possess one, which is why mine would have been the same). OT I know!
Regards - John

Ron, I love these pics. I prefer the color versions though. The black and white versions lack contrast, and the detail that is there in color is dark in the b&w.

Definitely the colour versions for me, Ron, I like them both. The colour in the sky in both, and in the green foliage in the second shot, make the picture. I don't think the subject of the shots suits black and white, It would need a stronger focal point in my opinion.

I agree with all of you. Those B&W shots just don't have the "atmosphere" that I would like...and the contrast I think is almost too strong. I didn't do anything other than a straight "desaturate" in PhotoShop, but I am sure I won't go back and do anything else with them, since the subject matter really doesn't lend itself to B&W here. I really wish I did have some filters for this camera, John, but I don't. It's the Mamiya 35-S rangefinder I just got a short time ago, and I was not even sure it was going to work, at first. But these shots, and those Kentucky horse park shots I posted a few weeks ago, were all shot with it, and I am very pleased...so I may pick up a filter or two! Irony of irony, about five minutes after I took the shot with the foliage, a pair of swans came around into view (I had not known they were there!). The sun was down enough for there to be some terrific orange-red things happening to the clouds, yet still high enough to light that swan pair perfectly! And I was out of film!
