I've recently acquired a Nikon D3000 and would like a bit of help with lenses. I've only ever had one other Nikon, a very dead FE that is lying in my box of bits awaiting some Frankenstein type experiments to bring it back to life so I am very much a Nikon novice. My basic question is what model lenses will directly onto the D3000's mount and which can I use with an adaptor? I've tried looking online but have just got myself confused. Thanks Matty

All Nikon lenses will fit the d3000, but anything without electrical contacts will have to be used in manual mode. You cant even meter. Buy a 'dandelion chip' - search the bay, and it will allow metering with any Nikon lens or Nikon fit lens. I even have one on a Zuiko I converted.
The only problem with the Nikon is the flange focal distance. Its just too long, limiting what you can do. I have got an M42 and a Minolta SR mount adapter with corrective lenses, where not perfect they allow me to use some of my favourite lenses on my D3100 and D3200. They are also chipped.
Adapters with corrective lenses perform best at f8

Thanks guys, I have managed to expand my Nikon compatible lens at quite a reasonable cost. Got hold of a Canon AE1 at the weekend with a Tamron Adaptall 135mm lens. Today I talked my way into the upstairs room at my local (ish) camera shop a sort of catacomb for film cameras. Some of the stuff they wanted quite a lot of money for but found a FED 3 and a Tamron Adaptall with the Nikon AI adpator. So I got the Canon, a 50mm lens, a 28mm and the Adaptall for £30 and then paid £10 for the Nikon adaptor and lens. When it stops raining I'll try and take some pictures with the D3000 and see how they turn out. Matty

I'm in the process of moving more toward manual focus lenses myself. This started with a "chipped" Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 that my brother sent me. I have a D300 which can meter with most manual lens, but I'd like to be able to do that with my D40 as well. So, I'm in a bit of the same situation as you are. There's a Tamron Adaptall 300mm on the way, so I'm interested in checking that out on my Nikons much like yourself.

Don't know much about recent Nikon DSLRs. I got the D300 because it will meter with MF non chipped lenses and my D50 will mount many Nikon mount af lenses. Nikon usually only gave the top end cameras MF metering capabilities.
