During (and after) the second world war my aunt had a photo shop in Antwerp. She kept on running the shop even if it was wartime and Belgium was occupated by the germans. German soldiers came in as customers to have their films developed and printed and my aunt did some photoreporting work herselve. After she died she left me with some of her photographs (sadly not much as a lot was lost). Here's what i've found in an album she left me, the second photograph is my mother in front of my aunts store .

Her customers were German soldiers. Reminds me of the South African war (1900-02). A lot of British soldiers had cameras with them, and sent their film to Johannesburg for processing, while it was still held by the Boers. A remarkable paradox.

All's fair in war and peace, and customers are customers - to m̶i̶x̶ mangle my metaphors.

In Feb. 1944 the ancient abbey on Monte Cassino was heavily bombed destroying the site that dated back to the 6th century. There is a small museum in the restored abbey. In the museum is a display case containing the surviving remains of crucifixes found in the bombed ruins. David

My paternal grandfather taken during WW2, my dad was just a young boy then. British Army. I know almost nothing else about him other than his 'second' family's son Paul Birch played for Aston Villa. Paul I guess would be my 'half uncle' and only about 4 or 5 years older than me. I've not seen him in 56 years.
