It is my worst working lens, as something has to be wrong inside due to low clarity in images. I have desided to dismantle the lens completely, to learn, perhaps to get a better working lens afterwards. Time will show. Need quick advice how to proceed, I cannot get the aperture scale off. A small screw could stop dismantling, at the red mark on the lens? Aperture scale is blocking for taking off the screw. I need to use a tool to get out some from the inside of the lens?

It does look like the back inside will be the way to go further, not much experience with this lens as far as taking it apart, There appears to be a slotted ring in there apart from the glass retaining ring. Stephen

Yes, great link. I have the earlier I26 with focus tab, but it seems the same otherwise. Then it is time to get a spanner, I did try with two small screwdrivers, it did not move at all. What type of spanner is recommended, maybe a general type I later can use on other lenses.

I have one of these, its fully adjustable but wont go much narrower than about 12mm, search 'lens spanner' on ebay.

You can get the tips to close more, under 10mm, by cranking them over, but have a model with spares! bear in mind that they are a bit lighter in design these days, for modern plastic body & ring lens, they may not be able to shift an old brass or steel ring that has paint on it! Of it will not shift add lighter fluid to the ring, or get a carbon steel ruler and grind a special spanner up to fit. The more expensive ones on ebay may be a bit tougher, but mostly the cost is the extra tips, I would say most work fine from about £10+

Many thanks, I knew of the book, but I did not realise it was a PDF. Most comprehensive service manual and advice. Stephen

Hello Truls, If you are considering a lens spanner I would go for one of the more expensive ones, the cheap set I bought certainly live up to the old adage, buy cheap buy twice. They did the job on the Jupiter 9 I wanted to take the front element off but promptly bent on the Minolta beer can I tried them on next. I must admit I bought them solely to try my hand at doing a little bit of lens repair so they weren't a total loss and the Jupiter results did give me the confidence to try my hand at doing some more complex repairs. I'll be buying a better set in the near future. The set Phil has posted looks better than mine as the allen screws will give a firmer base to the spanner. Regards Matty

matty: I will follow your advice, and get a high quality spanner. It seems this is not the last lens I will dismantle. I have done small repair as adjusting infinity focus on many lenses, complete dismantling is another story, and requires much better tools. Thanks!
My experience is a lot of lenses looses proper infinity focus in time, for some reason.. All Nikon lenses are spot on, better quality or what?
