U is for the Universal Camera Company, makers of the Mercury 35 mm cameras. In the case of my Mercury II, it could also stand for Ugly!

X is for Panatomic- X, Plus- X and Tri- X : the Kodak-made stuff that fed our cameras for years. I bought it in 35 mm cartridges of 20 or 36 exposures, 120 rolls of twelve 2 1/4 x 21/4 or eight 21/4 x 3 1/4 shots and in 25 and 50 sheet boxes of 4x5 and 31/4 x 41/4 cut film. While I used Agfa, Ilford, Fuji and other manufacturer's films, kodak's "X's" were definitely the big three for me!
