I've thought about a blog, to share my thoughts and photos. Facebook and my favourite forums are ok, but not always the best places. After the initial set-up I'm not sure when I'll update it. Keep an eye open anyway. Best wishes Phil Philslizzy's Wordpress blog

Thanks Truls. I intend to finish my family history (!) then show some paintings I've done and some samples from my writing. I dont like facebook, yes its a great way to keep in touch with people, but very soon everything gets lost in the flood of crap. I think there is room for facebook and my blog.

Well done Phil. The real Rocket has always been in London, now the Science Museum. Wasn't it refurbished and restored for the 150 railway celebrations? There were several replicas, mostly for films. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephenson%27s_Rocket

It was the original one my grandad said, borrowed in the early 50's and not returned. I seem to remember a replica on display either at York or in Manchester with a note saying that the original had been lost. Perhaps two or more engines were made to run the service when it started and thats whats in London. I've not googled it or anything. I guess I took my grandads word for it. I like the mystery. Thanks for reading my blog. I'm updating it later.

The original Rocket is in the Patent Office, now known as the Science Museum in South Kensington. There are replicas in several places, with the Ford replica at the National Railway Museum at York, which is a sectioned display, cut to show the interior. The NRM also has a 1970's working replica, which has toured several museums. The Ford one was a personal gift from Henry Ford to the Museum, in Kensington at the time.
The original Rocket is not quite as built, the Engine in use was rapidly over taken by newer designs, and was re-built, and used as a shunter, then put on display, after long storage at Stephenson's factory. In the Centenary celebrations in 1929, there was another replica made, powered by a diesel engine in the tender.
The original Rocket was partly re-built again to nearer the 1829 appearance, but as nobody is sure exactly what it looked like, it was left with different cylinders and boiler.
The main film star is the Lion, an 040, almost as old as the Rocket, but in working order, as featured in the 'Titfield Thunderbolt', but all is not quite as seen, as the remains of Lion were used by the LMS workshops to build in 1927 what is really a replica, with some original parts. The tender was new as was the boiler, wheels and fittings.
Stephen.

I dont like facebook, yes its a great way to keep in touch with people, but very soon everything gets lost in the flood of crap. I think there is room for facebook and my blog. I joined Facebook about 6 or 7 years ago. By the third day of my membership I was overwhelmed by strangers who wanted to be my friend. They had no idea what a miserable SOB I am so I assumed they all wanted something or they were psychopaths or both. By day four I was desperately trying to have my name removed from the Facebook roster. It seems to be impossible. I quickly put DB in my spam list and always delete anything I receive from them. I never could find my way out. I am trapped by what I consider to be a vicious invader of my privacy and a powerful destroyer of freedom of speech and freedom of the press. I often wonder just how much personal information it has on its members and how it might use that info. Some day I may find the key and escape its clutches - I hope. Mickey

Mickey I know what you mean. I closed my account and it went completely. Then one day I clicked on a link that took me to facebook (I didn't know it would) and bingo! my page was open again, just as it was when I left it.
Dead people want to be my friends. Now thats scary.
I'm a granddad again to little Isaac. Yippee!
