Interesting, most cameras in POW camps were made or obtained to photocopy documents that might be required for escapes, and therefore strictly banned in the camps on all sides.
Italy's early exit from the conflict left the Italian prisoners in a bit of a limbo, even before the end of the war they were treated as trusted, and for instance made unescorted visits to Church and to go shopping in our town.
Many made items for sale, all sorts of things, mainly from scrap materials in the camps. As it has a spirit level, I would suggest that indeed this was made for clandestine purposes in the active war period.
