Do you purposely try to acquire a black and chrome version of a camera? Got a pic of it?

lesdmess: I have a Pentax K1000 chrome not sure if their is a black one. I just wanted to tell you how good both versions look. You have great examples of the chrome and black. I have a question for you. Why does the black version cost more? Did most camera manufactures produce less black versions than the chrome versions?

I like the black versions, but trying to buy new in the UK was almost impossible, as importers were convinced that chrome was better. OMI for instance, chrome available at first, but no black for nearly two years. To make matters worst, we discovered that London shops were supplied with all the available black versions.......many makers did this, and must have been wrong as black digital cameras are more popular. Grey importers,(non official UK), imported more black OM1 than chrome, we had customers demanding black, as they had seen them in the Grey importers shops, but Olympus and Williams, the importer would not import them.

Looking at an ad from Modern Photo mag in May 1979, black is an additional $15.00 but only for the K2, MX & ME.

Back in the day the general feeling was a black camera made you at least look like a pro. I went through that stage but as a collector I would rather have chrome bodies. The finish on black cameras isn't as durable and brassing isn't a plus IMO.

I guess cameras that are normally available in black and cheap may have a more "rare" and therefore more expensive chrome version -> Chrome Minolta X-700.

I try as much as possible to collect the chrome and black version of every camera i have and of wich both versions existed. there's a limit however as i am not willing to pay ten times the price for a "rare" black (or chrome) version. I like equally both chrome and black for display, in use i prefer black cameras as they are somewhat more discreet and won't give nasty reflections in mirroring surfaces. Maybe i'm a bit in favour of black cameras as way back when i started photographing and earned 75 eurocents an hour, the black version of the nikon F was 20 euro's more expensive than the chrome one, making it even more an object of desire and controversy as i struggled with the question if i should save up some more to get the black one or should i just get the chrome one a month earlyer. ( it became the black one Later the black versions became the same price as the chrome versions or no chrome version was released anymore. To make things worse they've found out the titanium versions to get even more money out of your pockets... Here's a some of my black and chrome stuff, it's frustrating dat due to a house rebuild a large part of my collection is in boxes and not available for display.

Hanes, Why does the chrome version not have Mamiya ZE markings on it? Good question, I do not know the answer. Members of this board mentioned that "no name" versions of cameras are not that unusual. The Mamiya marking is normally engraved and printed. On mine is no sign of engravement. Mamiyas have been sold under 2 different labels but not in Europe. Till today I could not find a photo of a 2nd no name Mamiya ZE. Hannes

If they were rebranded, then I would expect the new brand name to be there. I can't say I have seen such a thing before, very unusual.

Perhaps the name was transfered on. It can come off with cleaning. I've had it happen with the odd camera.
