This fully equiped Nikon F2 AS is the newest addition to my collection. It is equiped with the MD2-MB2 motordrive and battery pack, DS12 auto diafragm control, DB1 cold wheather battery pack for the DS12 and MF3 filmback with rewind stop leaving the (film)leader out. About the DS12, back in '79 the shop price was 600 Euro (in '79 money!) it was a rather expensive way to transform the F2 AS in to a shutter priority auto camera. Because of this hefty price tag and the fact it gave shutter priority instead of aperture priority some of the photagraphers i knew prefered to go for a nikon EL as a second body. It had the advantage of aperture priority shooting, being a second body as backup for the F2 and it was cheaper than the DS12. To be honest i saw the F2 guys going more for the EL in their bag than taking out the F2. On top of that the EL could be equipped with a relatively cheap winder as oposed to the horrendously expensive MD2/MB1 motordrive for the F2. A cheaper alternative for the MD2 came somewhat later in the form of the MD3 wich didn't have the same functionality as the MD2
(no motor rewind, somewhat slower frame rate). Just to say it was VERY expensive in the seventies to have a camera equipped with auto exposure and film wind/rewind, something in later years became allmost standard on any camera for a fraction of the cost of what was high end gear back then. The lens that came with this F2 is a rather rare 28-50 3.5 wich was only produced for two years, it's a lovely little zoom with remarkable good image quality even though it was one of the cheapest zooms in the catalogue. (AF was a far away dream then)
