Just bought a Canon EOS 1n with box and instructions off ebay. £35.......... the auto focus is said to not work, worth a look, I used manual focus for 30 years before af came in so it is not a problem for me 90% of the time.

Thanks. If the Canon doesn't AF I will still be very happy. The journey through the post often has a good outcome!
The camera arrived in good order, looks like it has had light amateur use. I cannot make out what is wrong with the auto focusing, it just runs back & forth between close & far. I have tried a lot of different combination of buttons and studied the instructions, including resetting everything. I have only one lens to fit it and that is nearly new so it isn't that. There is no error message so I don't think it is far away from being OK. It is obviously a very strong pro camera with lots of potential.
What I think strange about it is the battery hidden away behind a door inside the grip which has to be removed with a coin, why not just a flap? Also the tiny awkward on/off lock switch. Far prefer the Nikon set up.

The battery inside the grip is a bit clumsy to replace, but i do prefer the coin /screw type of battery doors as the the flaps have an anoying habit of having the latch breaking off. The Canon ergonomics are a thing to get used to especially if you're a Nikon user. Are you planning on using the Eos? A few things wich prevents me using mine is the fact i haven't got any decent EF lenses and there's a lot of other cameras waiting to be tested before i get to the 1n. Even so i think i would use the Eos RT first even though it is not as "professional" ast the 1n. Did i ever mentionned that i hate non standard batteries? why oh why won't manufacturers just use AA or AAA type batteries there's room enough in these full size SLR's to fit some in, the 2CR5's aren't exactly easy to find and rather expensive.

I don't think that I will be using the EOS 1n. I nearly bought one when I wanted to change from my Canon AE-1. I went off Canon when I turned up at a camera show with £2000 to spend on a new AF system & the Canon 'sales persons' could not tear themselves away from their coffees! I turned round & bought a Minolta 9000 af, a 35-105 excellent lens and a couple of extra lenses off the stall behind me. Very pleased with the Minolta (now sold) and that used AA batteries with a slide-in holder.I also have a Canon EOS RT for show and I find the battery set-up very strange on that as well. If I go out with a film camera I still have my AE-1 from 1980 and have used my Olympus OM-1 but prefer the Nikon FM2, all MF..................
Final comment on the Canon EOS 1 n, I have just sold it on at a modest profit. Even if by some miracle it suddenly worked properly I could never have got on with it!
In regards to battery access, I see that some of the Leica digital cameras have no flap or 'hidden' batteries, the base of the battery acts as the cap to the compartment.
