Ever since 1960 due to the expansion of the port of Antwerp, some villages on the borders of the river the Schelde had to make way for the building of (more) container docks.
The village of Doel was one of them, but the villagers started a legal battle to prevent their village being swiped away. Over the years people have been forced to sell their property and leave the village, after wich it became a ghost town.
Now only an handfull of inhabitants remain taking a last stand for the battle to let the village survive. As of 2021 the final descision has been made: the village is to remain and owners wich have been forced to sell their property now have the right to buy it back.
Still 50 years of abandonnement and vandalism took a big toll on the village and a lot of work will be needed to restore it to its former glory. Even so a lot of people have shown interest in buying property andf it looks like there's a future for Doel as a village and comunity.
