The net is full of stories about how great (some) old leses are. The criteria are mostly sharpness, contrast, DOF, color reproduction and build quality.
This time i've tried 22 different 50mm lenses all set at f5.6 to see if there is any notable color rendition between different lenses and makes.
To be shure i would get the same light ateach shot i decided to do this test in the studio, 2 Nikon SB 800 provided the light, the Z6's color balance was set at flash light.
These are the lenses on test
1)Nikkor S-C 1:1.2 55mm
2)Nikkor1:1.4 50mm
3)Nikkor 1:2 50mm
4)Nikkor 1:1.8 50mm
5)Canon FD 50mm 1:1.8
6)Canon FD SSC 50mm 1:1.4
7)Canon FD SSC 55mm 1:1.2
8)SMC Takumar 1:1.4 50mm
9)Super takumar 1:1.4 50mm
10)SMC Takumar 1:2 55mm
11)Macro Takumar 1:4 50mm
12)SMC Penatax-M 1:2 50mm
13)SMC Pentax-A 1:1.7 50mm
14)SMC Pentax-M 1:1.4 50mm
15)Summicron -R 1:2 50mm Wetzlar
16)Summicron -R 1:2 50mm Canada
17Cosina Cosinon 1:1.8 50mm
18)Industar-50-2 3.5 50mm
19)Steinhell Cassar S 1:2.8 50mm
20)Edixa Westanar 1:2.8 50mm
21)Zeiss Jena Tessar 1:2.8 50mm
22)Helios-44 1:2 58mm
in the line up from left to right and top to bottom:
These are the results
and the lenses
Looking at the images and the histogram there's mostly only subtle differences, enough though to see different lenses render colors differently.
In the histogram of the nikkor 50 1.4 you can see a shift to the blue wich could explain Nikon's cool colours, where the Canon 50 1.4 has it's colours more grouped giving somewhat "richer" colours.
Things are a whole lot different with the takumar showing a brownish discolouration due to the thorium elements. The Helios is all over the place, but this is because i used the wrong adapter wich let in stray light.
So there you have it, the things some people do when it keeps on raining for weeks...
