When i've bought this Yashica "D" TLR i knew something was wrong with it. The nameplate says D but it has a winding crank and as far as i know there never was a D with a winding crank (allways a winding knob) or is there??? It didn't seem to me like a bodged repair all parts fit well and the camera is fully operational, could this be a "special"?
I decided to ask Paul Sokk if he could help me out and mailed him my problem, within a few hours Paul responded, this is what he said:
"The camera is almost certainly a Yashica Mat-LM body, the lens serial numbers suggesting that the original body serial number was near MTL 209xxxx (would have been on top of the removed exposure meter), or from September 1962. The lens numbers are typical of the Yashica Mat-LM as is the style of the ASA/DIN conversion scales on the circular plate on the crank.
The only part that belongs to a Yashica D is the nameplate, the serial number D 5071074 telling me that it is from 1965 (“5”), July (“07”).
Clearly, the Yashica Mat-LM selenium cell exposure has been removed – perhaps it was non-functioning or damaged in some way? The meter is completely self-contained and mounts the same way with two screws as the Yashica D or Yashica-Mat nameplates. The Yashica Mat-LM actually uses the same body as the Yashica-Mat, the only difference is that the LM swaps the nameplate for a meter, has the unique ASA/DIN conversion scales under the crank and on the focus knob, there are unique scales for converting the exposure meter reading to shutter and aperture speeds"
Now this is what i call an awnser! For those of you who don't know, Paul Sokk, he is the man behind the www.yashicatlr.com site where you can find everything you want to know about Yashica TLR's. It allways amazes me how someone can bring up that much dedication on building a site gathering and sharing such a wealth of knowledge for anyone to see. Have a look at his site even if you are even remotely interested in Yashica TLR's you won't be disappointed !
I hereby want to thank Paul for all his effort put in his wonderfull site and finding the time to help me out on such short notice.
Now i'm gonna try to clean the camera as it looks like it came back from the grave
