Recently i've bought this Summar 5cm f2. When it was introduced in 1933 it caused a sensation and even though it was very expensive Leitz couldn't keep up with the demand. But now 89 years later, how does this iconic lens performs? I did some tests and my conclusion was the Summar still is a sharp lens, but it is let down by its low contrast. Apart from the historic importance it can't keep up with more modern lenses. Some people use it for its "character" mainly in black and white so if that's your thing maybe it can work for you... Because of its poor performance i re-sold it and this is where leica lenses shine, i didn't loose any money on it . Here' s a few shots i've made with it mounted on the Z6 and compared to a 70'ties 50mm Jupiter 8 f2 wich costs about ten times less... On the left jupiter 8 on the right summar both at the same aperture (f2) When using the Summar on the Z6 the automatic white balance was all over the place, after correcting the RAW files it still gave a redish cast i couldn't get rid of.

Interesting comparison. Coated vs. uncoated is not really fair. At any rate, Summar comes off better than I expected.
