very nice, but I did have to change the blue / purple skin to the more calming grey and green.

Thye Prinflex 200 is on the right, no prizes for guessing that! 200mm Lenses by Mudplugga, on Flickr The build quality is fine, it's obviously a budget lens but still good. Optically it is poor, but it might be this copy. I bought a very cheap job lot of long M42 lenses and this was one of them. Just had a thought, is 'Alpex' short for ALlied imPEX - the company behind Miranda and Soligor ?

I think it is the same family as a Prinzflex Auto Reflex 200 / 3.5 that I have, it's the same style and finish and the line can be found under many different names, Aragon, Hanimex, Kalimar and Prinzflex ( the house brand of the Dixons store chain in the UK ) The thinking is that they are possibly manufactured by Sun and just sold as badged lenses to different stores and retailers. My 200 is probably the worst lens I have, it looks and feels good, I love the silver finish, but try as as I might I cant get a decent picture out of it. I hope the 28 is better.

Not exactly a barn, but still a building on a farm. This was originally the house on the family farm on my mothers side, my cousin is in the proper house now. It's one of the oldest recorded farms in Wales and is called Ffosybleiddiaid (force ee bly diad ) and translates as 'ditch of the wolf'. The last wild wolf in the country was killed there a long time ago. Old house. by Mudplugga, on Flickr

Ironbridge. by Mudplugga, on Flickr A few minutes from my front door is the River Severn, the longest river in the UK, and here it passes under the Worlds first cast iron bridge at Ironbridge. The whole area is now a World Heritage Site and considered to be the birthplace of the industrial revolution. Rolleiflex SL35 Planar 1.8 / 50 Ilford XP2 400

In about 40 years of photography I'd never owned, or even used, an Olympus SLR, then recently I bought a set with an OM 1n and a bunch of lenses for next to nothing in a charity shop and I discovered what I'd been missing for all those years. What a joy this camera is. ;D

I use a board with a row of different diameter semicircular holes as a rest, and a piece of wooden dowel, with a pointed end end as a chisel, to knock out dings in filter rings. That's what I've made, but out of ABS plastic. It's still soft enough to not damage the metal or the finish.

If they have any historical interest, even though they were shot in the 50's, it might be worth contacting a library or museum to see if they were interested in the movies as they stand, and hopefully get them to process them digitally for archive purposes. My nephew is a librarian at a university and they take all manner of historic media to preserve it, with Africa as a subject and maybe a local connection with your father to a local university it might be worth a shot?
My brother and I have hours of Super 8 transferred to DVD, it spans nearly 20 years of our childhood, it's priceless. But I haven't tried grabbing a still off it, I'll have a go.

Thanks, that's interesting. I don't think he'd sell it as it's a family piece, but it's still nice to know that it's a decent quality camera. From what I can tell nothing is missing or broken either. Any idea's about the era of that lens that's on it?

A friend of mine said he had an old woodworking lathe I could have so we went into the depths of his shed to haul it out. While we were in there I saw these. The Kodak Authographic is fairly common, I have a vest pocket version, but this one is quite tidy and complete. Then I found this.... which appears to be in remarkable condition. I know nothing about this kind of camera and Google throws up little information. Is it rare or valuable, or just a common plate camera? The Underwood has it's original wooden tripod, another lens, and a box with some 'accessories' - I need to go back and list them properly. There's also a big box of glass negatives. I made him store them in the house, so that's something!

I hate them, my wife got me a touchy feely phone when I lost my old Nokia, and I think there might be about 3 or 4 pictures on it, and she took them to show me the marvel that is a phone with a camera. But, I also hate mobile phones, if they ring someone always wants something!

My other great passion is driving in competitive off road trials, something I've done for nearly 20 years now, although my father taught me to drive in a Landrover when I was about 9 or 10 and I would sit on his knee. Now I drive this home built special that has some Suzuki chassis, Range Rover axles and some of its suspension, the engine is Subaru and the gearbox Daihatsu.
