from memory, which isn't very reliable, I think the white surface is caused by the loss of one of the elements of the plastic / rubber material which cannot be fully replaced. I think it's a paraffin type element, and if wiped on does help a lot. It's a problem classic car owners get with very old tyres, and there is a product they use called 'Tyre Reviver' or something like that, and on another camera forum people reported good results with it.

I was in Shrewsbury yesterday, I only live a few miles away. I use Minolta lenses a lot on my Sony A6000. I bought a SRT a few weeks ago as well. And the other stuff is always nice for any collection. I've got to go there on Monday as well. Dave

Oxfam do sell camera gear through some of the busier and bigger shops, I have had some good stuff from the Keswick shop ( In the English Lake District - Cumbria ). They do send all the camera's donated at various places to a shop / warehouse where someone assesses and prices them, so the prices are less than ebay but they certainly don't give the stuff away. It's all listed on their web site as well, and despatched from the few shops that hold the stock. The last time I was in the Keswick shop the very knowledgeable guy who does the assessing showed me a pair of large camera cases full of Leica's and lenses, all in pristine condition, that he had checked out and valued at £2,500, which is a lot of money for any charity and they simply cannot afford to let it go for next to nothing, which the smaller charities that get less donations are often forced to do because they simply don't have the people to assess the stuff, and it's not just cameras. I got the Contax cheap after explaining that it was potentially a valuable camera - if it worked. The manager let me have it cheap as a favour for what I do in assessing their cameras, and often replacing light seals and cleaning a camera for them to sell, with some degree of confidence that the customer won't be disappointed.
Norman, the list needs to be a bit more detailed. Some of the Canon's like the EOS300 were film or digital, although the digitals did have a D after the name - so I would say they are film ? And, what lens is fitted to them? there's a chance that the lens might be worth a lot more than the camera it's attached to. Put the lens details on the list, and a quick reckoning of the condition, make a note of obvious damage and fungus. Then the list will be of interest to the people who are the likely buyers. There are Facebook groups out there that you could just post the list on and wait for the buyers.

Norman, I help a few local charity shops by looking at their donated camera gear, and giving some sort of price to sell it at - if it is fit for sale. The charity shops don't want to sell faulty or untested equipment of any sort, so ratty old fungused lenses with dented filter threads are just junk to them, the same with cameras that have no battery, the battery holder might be corroded, the light seals and mirror bumper have turned to goo, they just can't sell this stuff. It's not worth the hassle of selling something that isn't working properly to someone who might not know enough to realize what they are buying. I throw a lot of stuff in the bin, the APS cameras, the cheap compacts, and flashguns with old batteries stuck inside just get binned. The better and hopefully salvageable stuff I usually end up buying, but I do take a chance on a lot of it. I paid £5 for an OM1 that is utterly jammed, and £10 for a Contax RX that had no battery, but is fully working and mint condition. It is a problem for the charities, they get this stuff and it's a limited market for it, especially the untested and scruffy stuff. To us it's too good to throw away, to them it's taking up space.

That's a great lens, very under rated.

See how it goes on the bay, you might get lucky as there aren't many other places to get them any more.

The 44A is one of the best Tamron zooms, I keep looking for a cheap one. You did well getting one at that price.
If you don't want the hassle of ebaying the Minolta mount let me know how much you want for it as I broke one a few weeks ago when I dropped a lens, but the lens survived without any damage at all. I was lucky!

I posted this on another forum just last night -
House clearance stuff generally ends up in the small auctions, the kind that are held in village halls once a month. I've had some luck at these auctions, but often the camera stuff is in with a mixed box of general crap. Probably the best bargain I got was a gorgeous vintage Vivo chrome tripod that was in a huge box of filthy old kitchen pans and crockery. Which I just took outside and tipped straight into a skip. The whole lot cost me £1-50. At most of these auctions the punters are re - sellers, the junk just gets divided up between the people who sell a particular type of junk, so they're not interested in camera gear and pull out of bidding early on, it's easy to outbid them and still get a bargain. The downside is, you have to go to these auctions every time they hold one, and then search through box after box of utter crap in the faint hope of finding something good.
I don't go to the auctions very often, usually when I've got some crap - sorry, antiques, to sell. But I have had some decent bargains.

I had a look at Oxfam's web site tonight and there were no real bargains there. Maybe a Kiron Macro 80-200 / 4.5 in excellent condition for £45 was the best buy? And there was a couple of decent Tamron zooms at sensible money, but most of the stuff wasn't worth bothering with. Interestingly, they seem to sell everything as 'untested - spares and repair'. The charity shops just don't want the hassle of selling something that might turn out to be faulty. So the camera stuff ends up in a big box in the store room, and when it's full it gets binned. I always ask if they have they have anything camera related, and always explain that I'm an enthusiast collector and will buy stuff 'as it is' with no comeback on the shop. I'm finding that you have to push the shops into letting you see and buy camera stuff, but that in a strange way makes it better, you get to see everything.

Some of the bigger OXFAM shops sell a good range of camera stuff, they do get it assessed by someone and then send it to those busy branches and list it on their web site. I've had some good stuff from the Keswick shop, and the last time I was there they probably had about 25 lenses and maybe 10 or 12 cameras. Obviously they now charge more than they used to, but they are still cheaper than ebay, and they refund without question if there is a problem. I bought a Tamron 500 mirror for £100, which would have been £130 + on ebay, that was decentered and got a refund the next day. The best bargains are found in the small charity shops, the local dog and cat rescue type of charity, and especially in rural market towns. But you've got to beat the other guys, and there's getting to be more of us hunting the bargains. I know 2 other guys local to me that get a lot of stuff, and they just bang it on ebay the same day with nothing more than a wipe with a polishing cloth.

Yes, I've packed a bit of soft foam around the sides and a bit of kitchen foil under the battery cover to make contact with a LR44 battery, which seems to work just fine. The sun is shining today for the first time in ages so I think I'll throw a film in it today. I'm haunting the charity shops at the moment, I picked up that Yashica / Contax kit the other day - Contax RX camera, Yashica FX-D camera and a bunch of Yashica lenses, no Contax lenses. But, in the bag and on some of the lenses there are Contax lens caps, so I'm guessing whoever owned it had the Contax lenses? So where are they, did someone spread their donations around the different charity shops? The trouble is, as I carry on my search I find other stuff like this lovely Olympus !

You're right Phil, my life hangs by a tenuous thread between what she knows about and what I've got! But I am trying to shift some of it, I sold a Soligor 400 last week, and I've just sorted out a pile of zoom lenses, some camera's and 'stuff' to sell as well. I'll have the list on the various forums today with some luck. There will be bargains, my life depends on it!

I've never been much of a 'beach bum', but I do use my cameras in just about any conditions, so it's good to know about that known problem. I've done all the light seals today and given it a good clean. It's ready to go. Along with the Yashica FX-D Quartz and the Contax RX that I picked up last week, and I've got film in about half a dozen other cameras as well. Once the weather gets better I shall get out and waste some film - I promise!
