At an Emmaus outlet (you know them, Francois?! - the charity shops around Utrecht) I found a pristine Yashica T5 for €4,50... At Ebay they fetch a factor 20 to 30 more... Should I sell it? Or just being happy for a while:-) Hans I think i've been in one of those Emmaus shops in Terneuzen. in Belgium we've got opnieuw&co, de kringwinkel ad to some lesser extend the salvation army family shops. I didn't find anything photographic worth mentionning in the last few months, i did find a sony TC366 reel to reel tape deck in as new condittion for 15 € at opnieuw&co last week,i had one of those way back in 1975, i've traded it for a Norton dominator 650 rebuild as a race bike (with a clutch problem) I don't think nowadays anyone will make me the same offer...so i'll stick with the tc366 for a bit longer.

Christchurch NZ, one of the few buildings in the epic center of the 2011 earthquake still standing (more or less) Did the paint indeed do what it promised???

Did anyone ever notice that just about every type of camera has its digital counterpart, be it as an integral camera or with an adaptall digital back. But as far as i know there never ever was a digital TLR ( maybe for obvious reasons) I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of a digital back for my Canon T90. I don't want much - just the switch from film to digital, that's all. The T90 will comfortably take care of everything else. Please hurry. Mickey Mickey, look at this : www.theinspiredeye.net/converting-film-cameras-to-digital-efs-1-the-technology-that-almost-was/ if only....!

When in the early sixties SLR's became the norm, it looked bad for leica, not much people wanted range finder cameras any more and it seemed they would die a silent death... Now 50 years later leica M series are still around and people are willing to pay ridiculous prices for them. If we could draw the line further to what will become of slr's maybe the same thing will happen, they won't seace existing, but might become a niche product for die hards or the happy few, only time will tell... Oh and BTW mirrorles hasn't convinced me so far...

Isn't there allways a girl involved? In the late sixties in our hippie days, a girl on wich i had a crush had a sensorex, i then still used my linhoff press. I thought the miranda was an ugly camera with that stupid chrome star on front of the prism, i didn't gave it a second glance, i told her to get a nikon F if she wanted a decent camera...
Years later we met again and she confessed she had a crush on me to but was engaged with someone else...by that time we where both maried and sighed at the prospect of what could have been if things had taken an other turn, i never saw here again since that day. This might explain why the sensorex holds a special place within my miranda collection.

Just returned from our two month trip to NZ the severe jet lag couldn't prevent me from "being at it again". Browsing through the small ads i came across a "lot of old cameras" , what really caught my eye where two mirandas between the usual heap of kodak instamatic and such. Though the ad seemed to be some time on the site i decided to give it a go and call the seller. Yep it was all still there and i could come around to have a look at it.The mirandas where both in good condition a pentax spotmatic F was jammed solid but looked good, then there was that pentax SFxn with short and long AF zooms,a kodak folder and box camera some small P&S cameras, enlarging lenses,a sixtar light meter and the usual lot of filters. The guy was happy that finally someone turned up and we met in what i was willing to pay and what he was willing to let the lot go for. So here's a pic of my first catch after a long vacation. I'm only going to keep the mirandas and the spotmatic, finally i've got a sensorex after wich i've been hunting for two years, the rest will be garage sale stuff.

If you're in Dunedin, there's an auction which has a few cameras, on today. At the moment i'm still in Wanaka, but i'm heading for Quenstown, Dunedin will be on my route one of the following days but it is unlikely i'll be in time for the auction.

Hey guys ! some of you you might have wondered where i've been. Well i'm in the fifth week of my holidays in New Zealand, there hasn't been much time for camera collecting. Still when paasing a few days in Singapore on the way i was very tempted by what was on offer in the classic and second hand camera shops ! I didn't know then that i would be needing a camera in a hurry very soon... In the first week of NZ my trusty D300S fell in a waterfall after hitting two rocks on its way down ( for some obscure reason the quick coupling pate on the tripod just came loose),i was able to pull the camera out of the water but it was completely destroyed. This is the first camera in my 45 years as a photographer i've lost ( no actually the second as i my Fuji S3 drowned and refused any more service after a terrencial rainfall during a reportage with no place to seek shelter). Problem was i still had six and a half week of NZ to go and no SLR. I still had the P600 and the AW100 but these weren't exactly what i had in mind for my further photo report on NZ. To make a long story short, NZ isn't a camera country, and i was unable to find anything decent to replace my D300S untill after a week i met a pro wedding photographer who was willing to sell me his (well used) D300S for a reasonable sum. From then on i was back in buisness, the 17-35 did survive the plonge and after some initial refusing to AF it came back to life and has been most of the time on the camera ( i still had the 8mm fish, the 12-24 and the 50-150 with me but those were only usable in certain situations) Well i hope no more disasters will happen in the coming two and a half weeks and if i get back safely to Belgium i"ll post some pictures. ( a bit difficult with this connection)

On one of my recent photo shopping tours i came across this Helios 135/1:28 its in as new condition and only cost me 5€. I assumed it was a Russian lens, but the JCII sticker should have warned me also the made in Japan on the front ring could have rung a bell. After a brief google it became clear that some japanese factory was desperate enough to use the Helios name as some sort of quality label to put on their otherwise no name lenses. I can't complain about the build quality as it is better than most Russian stuff i've held, optically there isn't much to brag about. It is indeed 2.8 and some people seem to be very pleased with this lens and mostly mention you can't go wrong for the price they've paid for it. I must admit i've seen worse, when mounted on a mirrorless it'll probably give you some pleasing results. However the same 5€ bought me a pristine super takumar 200mm 1:4 now it might not be very scientific to compare this to the helios but just to show even 5€ can get you real quality versus "pleasing" results i made this comparison. The set up Helios@2.8 ( et 5.6 it did inprove but not by much) Super takumar@ 1:4 And for something completely diffrent, the nikon P600 at 900mm-5,6 1/125 sec handheld if you like tele shots the p600 really kicks a** (i paid less for the p600 than the NX100 setup !)

Last week i came across this minolta XE5, the price was such that i could't resist it. I thought i already had one, but when i came home i saw the one i had was a XE1, at first sight they are the same. Closer inspection shows some five diffrences, no double exposure, no apperture and no chosen manual speed info in the viewfinder, no FP sync and no viewfinder blinds. The XE5 was clearly the low(er) cost version of the XE1. Further research learned the XE1 was the most expensive camera in its segment, pentax ES,nikkormat EL,canon EF,all were cheaper ( only leica R3 was twice as expensive but that shouldn't be no surprice) Anyhow in retrospect i don't think it was such a good idea from minolta to market the camera as such as it seems like just another attempt to become a player in the higher end of the market, but it couldn't convince canon or nikon buyers to switch brands. ( a bit like what happened with the XM) I'll keep the XE5 though as it still is a lovely full size heavy metal SLR worthy of display alongside my (ever growing collection of) other minoltas.

Stephen asked :What are the cameras you still want, desire, or hanker for, and are very rare, and then cost a fortune when they show up.
Awnser: black nikon SP, and at some more moderate prices but still to expensive : FM3, F6, F3P, F2T.

I can't believe you actually bought a dead Zenit B. Me neither! it is beyond me why any one would want any zenith unless they want to repent and punish themselves with one of the worst slr's ever made. There used to be a time when zenit's were the only cheap ticket into slr photography. I can remember way back in the sixties one of my friends bought a zenit because he wanted a "new" camera, i was quite happy with my exakta with a nice 50mm 1.9, 135mm 3.5 some extension tubes and what not, second hand for the same amount of money he paid for the dreaded zenith. Still if a zenit is your thing, do enjoy, it's just me and zenit's don't mix
