From what i've seen on Ebay there has to be some real nice stuff to be had in Japan often at interesting prices (if you don't go for the "exotics") unfortunatly i don't think i'll be visiting Japan in any short period of time I will be going to Singapore on the 20th of Januari for a few days and then travel on to New zeeland where i'll be traveling around for some two months. Should anyone know of good second hand camera stores in any of those places do let me know !

I don't own any Pentaxes Can you tell us what you like about them? Why indeed would some one collect pentax cameras? Well if u are a user then lesdmess sums up quite nicely what there is to like about pentax. If you are a collector, pentax has an interesting history and it's fun to collect models that where inportant in slr history. I myselve started collecting them after i had everything i wanted from nikon and canon (and a few others) and found it a nice challenge to get the models i've wanted both in chrome and black versions. The fun thing with pentax is they can be had quite cheap and even the "special" ones can be found cheap in comparison to similar models from nikon or canon. Apart from all that, pentaxes are well made cameras (safe for a few quirks here and there) if you stick to the early ( late fifties to early eighties) types with manual film wind, those do look nice on the shelve and should you feel the urge shooting film, they are still very usable today.

I don't want to stray away to far from the original topic of this thread but got intrigued by the claim of Hannes in stating the FG20 would be cosina based. I allways thought it was based solely on a further develepment of the EM. Looking at the cosina files on this very forum it is not mentionned while the FE10 and FM10 are as well as the oly OM10. The Fm and Fe definatly got the cosina feel and look to them while the OLY 10 dosn't. Can any one shed some light on this (maybe in a new thread). I have a lot of these diffrent brands cosina clones( canon, nikon,exacta,petri...) and they all look, feel and sound the same, the buttons and switches are all in the same place and none of them has a winder or motor drive coupling. The OM 10 and FG (20) are so diffrent from the cosina's that it is hard for me to believe they are based on them.

Ive found that simple kitchen vinegar solves most leaked battery problems corroded contacts can be cleaned with it applied on a cotton swab without causing any (further) damage, just clean any residue with distilled water. Jammed battery covers can be made to come loose again by dripping in some vinegar, the vinegar is fluid enough and will find it's way through the thread of the battery cover. Heating the vinegar will speed things up. I put any loose corroded (due to battery leakage)parts in a small jar with hot vinegar this will disolve all oxides, then rinse them with water thorougly dry them and in most cases they are good to go. This has saved me many cameras over the years, the only one that couldnt be resscued was a nikon 35AW because it was jammed solid and wheather sealed so no fluids could be applied from the outside of the camera.I did save a canon T70 in wich the battery was completely seized,it was the worst one i've ever had, some vinegar, some patience and the job was done T70 lived happily ever after. Be carefull though, mostly after a leaky battery the chrome covering the contacts is gone and you're left with brass contacts, they are very prone to corrosion and from then on you'll allways need to leave the battries out when the camera is not in use.

Well, i have to confess i haven't got a singel one. The disc cameras never appealed to me not when they where new and not now when they can be found in the 1€ baskets in sharity shops and such. I guess i'm not the only one to wich the disc cameras have no appeal as i never saw one sold for a premium price. The fact that they are without exeption all very simple cameras with a dissapointing image quality must have something to do with that. The same goes for 126 fomat cameras, allthough some people seem collect those but mostly by "fun" collectors who buy them because they are to be had very cheap and still ooze out some nostalgia. I miscalculated myselve in thinking polaroids would be worth something someday, upon till now after 40 years of collecting i've only see the prices go down ( save one or two exeptions) here in Europe prices can be sometimes "fair" but what i've seen on American ebay even the older ones can be had at rock bottom prices. The polaroids did learn me a lesson though ( and scolarship cost money) If you want to avoid dissapointments in collecting collect things because you like them, not because you think they will be worth something someday or it 'll bring you a profit. As long as you're okay with that you can collect anything you want and be a happy collector. ( providing you've got enough place to stack it all and have no or a very understanding wife)

After seing this website www.mrmartinweb.com/camera.html i feel like i'm living in the wrong place. This Mr. Martin has a nice camera collection, i own many of the cameras he has, but i seem to have paid them way to much. With every camera he describes on his site he tells the story of where he got it and how much he paid for it. The prices he payed for his cameras can only make me envious. For instance he claims he paid 50$ for an original 1959 canonflex and an additional 15$ for the 50mm f 1:1.2 lens. I was glad i finally found a canonflex in Australia (wich is the other side of the world for me) for 240$ as they are so rare i was giving up hope ever finding one. Then there's the olympus pen Ft with the ultra rare 1:1.2 42mm for wich he paid 40$ i bought mine with the "normal" standard lens for 120€ and thought it was a steal. I'm not even going to start about what he paid for his nikon collection. Now allmost all of his cameras were bought in California- La Mesa in garage sales others where on craiglist or an occasional Ebay. Now i ask you if someone lives in that area or has been there, do you know if these prices are common practice in that part of the world (and are the streets lined with gold???) I mean as long as i am collecting i've never EVER found a "real" classic for peanuts, allways had to pay the price, exept for some less desirable cameras wich do sometimes pop up way below their list price . Anyway seing the camera prices in La mesa CA garage sales i'm seriously thinking to spend some time there cleaning up those garages ! BTW. Mister Martin has a very nice and informative website.

What's in a name, to wich we call a camera by any other name would be as sweet? When searching after my lost pentaxes i came across this odd pair. They look very much a like and as far as i am concerned they are, as they are both cosina ct1 's in disguise. Although after some research on the web most people say the Braun Sr 2000 is Chinese made and not Japanese (like the cosina /nikon). So i was wondering did the Chinese make a copy of a copy or were they at some time licensed to make cosina clones badged with wathever name they could come up with? BTW this is the Braun with PK mount, they were also made with MD mount (and are these somehow related to those horrible centon minolta clones?). The nikon is a FE 10, i haven't go't an FM 10 nor am i willing to pay the silly asking prices for a piece of plastic nikon travesty.

@ Lesdmess,by practical sharpness i didn't mean to say these lenses wouldn't be capable of producing top results, i just didn't want to start nitpicking in making claims like the zuiko could resolve two more lines than the takumar or things like that wich are of little use in everyday shooting. And luckily i don't need to choose between either of them to. It's just with film prices reaching the level of what you pay for such cameras (well maybe not just as much as a black MX) one has to be carefull what to do whit his precious film. @pauylofseth. I now and then enjoy using cameras in my collection for what they are made for, just like a classic car enthousiast would now and then take his oldtimer for a spin. I guess stampcollectors rarely use their stamps to see of they will still be able to get the letter delivered :-) I haven't got an OM 4 but i like my OM2 spot and i hate it for the same reason people complain about OM 3's and 4's and that's the battery consumption.

With the aquisition of a black MX my (black) pentax collection is growing increasingly. I know i have more of them but i can't seem to find them, they got to be in a box somewhere, frustrating when you know you've got something and you can't find it...

this thread: cameracollector.proboards.com/thread/9083/olympus-om-comparable-which-nikon?page=1&scrollTo=75168, made me think , What if you had to choose between an OM 1 and a pentax MX. On first sight two cameras much alike but on closer inspection things are diffrent. The OM 1 has 97% viewfinder coverage while the MX "only" has 95% OM 0.92x viefinder magnification, MX 0.97 though the MX viewfinder gives a larger image, contrast and brightness are better in the OM. The MX has no mirror lock up, Film transport feels about the same on both camera's, shutternoice is more muted on the OM. EV Range on the OM = 2-17, MX =1-19 ISO range on both 25-1600ISO both can use winder or motordrive.Pentaxes K bayonet gives you a wider range of lens options and OM lenses tend to be more expensive. I don't have MTF charts on the lenses but in normal use there isn't much diffrence. So wich one would i pick? to be honest the OM has a more quality feel to it but is let down by it's use of mercury cells wich are non obtainable ( there are solutions, non of them cheap or easy) So after being biassed towards the OM, the MX seems the more practical solution it's a bit of a tie to me. Wich one would you choose and why ?

This is my rolleiflex SL 35 E I think it is a beautifull designed camera wich has a unique look and feel to it. Shutterspeed adjustment isn't as smooth as i would like it to be but everything else works fine. I can recall a friend of mine used to own a SL35 and he broke the transport shaft because he'd thought the film transport went " a little " stiff. Over the years i have come across several SL 35 with the same problem so i guess it's a weak point or a design flaw of the sl35. The Sl 35 of my friend was a Singapurian made don't know if the same problem exists with the german made ones.I don't want to bash on rollei but i must add i had trouble with just about every rollei i've own(ned) SLX, Rolleicord, Rolleiflex 2,8F, 35se,s35...

Here's a quick pic of what i've suggested, plus one, there isn't any nikon that comes as close to the OM as the pentax M series .

Depending on exactly what you like about the OM 2 there are a few candidates. 1 The most likely candidate : The FE, main diffrence is the OTF metering of the OM and the fe being some 70 grams heavier. 2 The EM lighter and even smaller than the OM , No manual mode though. 3 If you really like the shutter speed ring concentric with the lens mount like the OM then there's only the nikkormat F series but they are large heavy and all manual mechanical cameras. 4 if you would move away from the OM2's time frame then the FA would be a good choice radically diffrent in features, but not in handeling. One BIG problem with the OM2: it is completely battery dependable, all nikon's have at least one mechanical shutterspeed in case of battery failure.

Here's another one in my collection: the sea&sea motormarine II . Seems like it is designed by the minions. It has a fixed 35mm f3.5 lens, but has a range of wideangle screw-on lens adapters and it has a build in flash. It was, and probably still is a cheap(er) alternative for the nikonos V.
