I have lost many cameras , mostly Minolta SRTs in the good old days , left on trains due to a memory glitch associated with disassociation and derealisation which is as near as d...it part of the autism spectrum. [ it was amazing when I recognised and understood , experienced ? the logic of autism whereas 'common sense ' leaves me bewildered ]
Age seems to make everything worse , with momentary confusion and gaps - it's not new as it is for some - it's just more of the frustrating/boring/familiar/same .
Latest is the pocket Fuji XF1 , left in a store when taking out my headphones to filter out noise and people etc.
This time I am in luck as I finally recalled where I left it and it was found . Just 45mins drive to collect it - plus a lot of grief at home as it;s just part of a list of
The memory stuff has ever been a problem , but snapshots help a lot , even if I can't put things in time order etc. The XF1 is my memory camera these days/daze , so a little ironic !! LOL.

The Beetle was on hold pending a cancer scare , not that I am too bothered about it as I have had a good innings . That's resolved as clear , but the creaking Alfa has just been MOT - government tested ] for a few months , so less urgency . Thanks for your feedback Randy - it helps to know that someone is happy with a Beetle ! dee

I still prefer a DSLR - even the squinty 4/3rds Panasonic L1!

It's interesting to note reviews of the Leica Digilux 3 with it's somewhat basic live view which reviewers rather dismissed as a gimmick.
This is in contrast to Sony's early implementation of live view with a CCD sensor requiring the complexity of a second sensor , which actually works rather well Of course the mirror less revolution accelerated the adoption of what was considered a compact camera facility and now everyone is doing it !!

A strange connection , but I was fascinated by slide shows and the magic of cameras as a dee'sorienttated child .
It was not until 15 years ago that i broke through into being otherwise - rather than other-stupid.
I realised that I was severely high frequency deaf as a child and lip reading - being unable to hear the teacher properly and taking down notes before the blackboard was wiped . Of course , this is common at near 70 years , but others strain to hear and I turn up the lights !! I can still hear accents on TV with the sound off as I watch how words are domed . . my 1st decent sound system was severely lacking in bass , but there was little distortion which I am very sensitive to , hence my favourite 50-100 mm nominal lens !! LOL.
Actually , the three glitches made it much easier to work out how it all is - each informing on the other , helped enormously by a therapist who explained that perception of a solid 'reality ' is a function of the brain's ability to interpret . I realised that my mind sees ' snapshots ', whereas most can blur the edges of snapshots , elimination surplus detail , creating a film , I can't . it also froze at around 10 years [1957] when the hard drive became full and it can't deelete no longer valid files and substitute new . I can overide intellectually , but it's habitual 'learning' rather than a natural being . Maybe this is why i am also outside 'common sense ' which is simply the majority expectation and recognition. i also find taking in an object difficult , as my mind seems to forget or not assimilate easily. Having several ' same ' or almost same helps as if I am seeing ' Kiev Again ' rather than 'several Kievs
Being behind a camera helped isolate me from conversations and trying to fit in with an expectation of gender and perception experience which I do not comprehend . It also permits me to edit what is around me , because it's all too confusing and overwhelming when everything is unreal , dislocated , mist like . it also helped eliminate ' me ' from most photos as this sends my 'miss-aligned' mind into melt down !!! I don't do mirrors as it's almost OK looking out from inside !! LOL.
It was not about the photos as I realised when I found dozens of unprocessed films , although with the advent of digital , those fragments of frozen time help with a dee'sjointed memory with little sense of continuity or placement .
An odd connection to snap shooting and camera collecting perhaps , but very valid for me - especially the continuity of Contax/Kiev from 1935 to 1981 or so ! Perfect ! Thanks for listening .

initially , the 1957 Kiev 4 had no strengthening ridges on the meter cover which led to indentations on the ultra thin aluminium . Some appeared in 1958 alongside the revised version with the familiar stamped ridges.
Despite preferring the original Kiev 4 re-working as a closer copy of the post war Contax , and when standards were still acceptable, I would not consider paying Oleg around £100 with shipping to restore one when I could , and did , buy a rough Contax to revive , in this instance by Arsensal techs .
The fact is , is that a 1957 is 'just another Kiev 4' which have little market value , especially in the rough broken condition of my 3x , but as donors for my Kiev/Arsenal rebuilt Contax III/Kiev 4 and KNeB III / Kiev 4 rebuilds they have genuine ' value ' to me .
To me, it's a shame that this almost prototype run of early Kiev 4 when the Technicians were proud of their modifications using restricted materials and facilities are not recognised , but then I would not have been able to pick mine up at around £30 each inclusive .
it may be increasingly likely that quite attractive early film cameras will not be ' worth ' repairing as digital continues to take hold , but then , who would have predicted the return of the record deck !?

I have my 'Contax IV ' next to me as i write .
Somehow my mind seems to have adopted Contax/Kiev as ' right / real '.
The body is 1937 ex-Contax III and then top plate is a rare, but unrecognised , 1957 Kiev 4 [ without the strengthening ridges on the meter cover to prevent the dints in the thin metal ] - 20 years in one camera ! I love that ! I could have had a much later Kiev 4 meter etc fitted , but quality in the very first Kiev 4 , whereby the engineers were proud of their modernising with limited resources was infinitely better .
I also have a Kiev 3a/4 - 1956 first type body with modernised 1957 Kiev 4 meter etc. There is evidence that some such hybrids were made to use up older bodies , but tho is a rehash .
Next to the Contax IV is a mint boxed UK TOE Kiev 4a of 1979 although I also have a 1981 Kiev 4m with dark blue leather and my silver/tan Contax II from 1935 .
Such continuity and ' sameness ' from 1935 to 1980 , 45 years , must be rare , and just having them around is somehow calming .
Certainly my favourite film camera/s !

I had dee'scounted a new VW Beetle because of the cost . I did not like the previous attempt at retro , but the new one is reminiscent of a Porsche and it seems to be more heavily discounted that the Polo and Golf , which are boring boxes . I love the retro look with wings as my hard drive got fixed around 1957 and i can't dee'lete and add more appropriate
I can buy one for £14,000 which is affordable and £4,000 off list It's based on the 6th generation Golf , but thats is a an advance on the Alfa Romeo 147 . I can only imagine that VW need to keep the production line flowing for a niche product . It would be the 1st quality car I have owned , Fiat Group and Citroen are not renowned for quality ! Hopefully , it would stand up to 15 years of retired motoring ! It won't b until early 2016 because I will be servicing and MOT the 147 at the end of the year , dee

it's a follow on from the Sony A290 recognition in that the adverse reviews tended for me to treat the budget Sony very differently from my 'unaffordable' much cherished Leica M8 .
I take my time with the M8 , considering all options of exposure etc and taking care to hold it steady .
I am afraid that I would often not check the appropriate shutter speed and pushed the camera to ISO 400 which messed with the IQ , not to mention not holding it firmly .
There is a chasm of cost , quality and ultimate ability between the cameras , but every camera deserves the respect to ensure it operates at it's best . I now know it's limitations as I do with the Leica and Leica Digilux 3 , so it will be an enjoyable learning curve once more .
I guess that no-one here would make that mistake !

Thanks , but it's still weird , but ASdee is like that - I 'imprint ' on one thing which becomes more tangible amongst the 'lostness'. i do need to find out WHY so it becomes manageable .

Back in 1997 , on the way to Toronto from Uk, I bought a point and shoot at the airport - rather than my bulky Minolta 7000i.
It was a silver plastic Minolta 404si which was a perfect lightweight companion with reversal film as I was going through the beginning of some serious mind blowing revelations .
I was able to escape on the bus to some arty places around Toronto which I loved and took some great snapshots .
More than a decade later I was given a Sony A290 which , unusually hands and eyes immediately combined to make as real as it will ever get ! I loved the colours I remember with that 35-80 , conveniently stretched to a perfect 52-120.
I have just now , compared the Minolta with the Sony - and they are virtually identical in handling and layout , so my lost-in-space brain had no dee'ficulty tuning in !!
Like the 404si, the A290 is not considered a serious camera , but the sharpness/colour/dynamic range etc at ISO 100 is OK for me, so just a slight drop from ASA 200 back then , which I can accommodate ... i don't try to push above ISO 200 'cos dee'saster awaits !!
Sometimes it's not the perfect camera which turns out to be perfect !!
