I've been offline for the past week because I've been in hospital. We discovered that the hospital offers a wireless service to patients and visitors so Marion brought me my laptop and I'm plugged in again. What brought me here were some sharp chest pains that were becoming similar to the ones I had two years ago when I had a heart attack. I decided not to be stubborn so we dialled 911 and I was scooted off to emerg. Bloodwork, ECG's and x-rays showed I didn't have a heart attack, but the readings weren't quite normal either so they kept me in for more tests and observations. An angiogram showed that my pesky artery, the one that has now has four stents in it has reblocked again -- 95% blockage. So ... next week I'll be having open-heart surgery and either a single- or double-bypass op, depending on what they see. As one of my friends quipped think of it as a CLA! Actually Marion and I are looking forward to getting the op done so I can get on with rehab and finally be angina free. So that's why I've not had a chance to comment on the lovely photos I've seen posted here. Cheers to you all! Gene

Gene,
I am sorry to hear about your problem. But the prospect of your being free of angina is very cheering. I am pulling for you. Don't forget we have a tentative date. I'm holding you to it. If there is anything I can do, photographically not medically, just ask.

Gene, I'm praying, as I'm sure are all of us, for a successful op and convalescence. Our thoughts are with you and Marion. Best of luck, buddy, and don't go overdoing it when you come out of hospital. Take it nice and easy and use a lightweight P&S, not a heavy tank SLR, for a time.

Wishes for a speedy recovery after the operation. It seems you have a stalwart companion in Mario and I'm sure that will help a lot.
Do what you have to do...but get well.
And I second the motion you carry a small camera around for awhile afterwards.

Thanks so much for your support and kind thoughts! Yes, I figured a smaller, lighter camera would be needed, and how could Marion deny me at a time like this? There's a package at home with a new Nikon D40 in it to stand in for my D200 until my strength returns The D40 is small and light. I've posted a blog entry about my adventure: blog.genewilburn.com/archives/35Gene

Gene: Hope your docs are are good as Oleg at doing CLAs. You should be better than new! (pretty sneaky on the D40 ) We'll be looking forward to you getting all your shutter speeds operating again. Regards Wayne

The Nikon D40 and the D40x are both great cameras according to all the reviews. I looked at them myself once I decided to go digital, but I have 6 or 7 Nikkor AF-D lenses which will not work on them for all functions.
So I decided to save...I hope, I hope...for a D300...wish it could be a D3.
In the meantime I found that Canon 30D with battery grip, 430EX flash, a Canon 17-85 and Tamron 18-200 lenses for $900 plus about $300 of N-gauge model railroad equipment.
The 73 year old man who bought the outfit new also had a Tamron 11-18 lens which, in a fit of rage, he threw against the wall and broke according to his wife. Why? Up till then, he was still shooting film in a Canon 1N and found the learning curve of the digital too frustrating.
His misfortune...my gain.
But once again...your health and recovery come before your photography!

Wow! Thanks for all your kind messages. Mickey, once I'm ambulatory and strong enough, we need to meet up for a nice photo shoot.
Renaldo, you scored an incredible find. The Canon 30D has been a stalwart body -- a really well-made digital.
Most of my Nikkor lenses won't meter on the D40 but I'm pretty good at sunny-16 and once you shoot a test shot, it's easy to adjust by looking at the histogram. The good news is that all my lenses will work on it, including the pre-AI ones.
I'm in a holding pattern right now. The procedure is scheduled for Tuesday, Apr 22. The meds and rest have me nicely stabilized but I gotta tell ya, if Marion didn't keep sneaking in some real food for me, I don't know how I'd survive. Hospital food. Blech!
