I have just gone through my collection and entering the data on all my items, serial numbers conditions and types of each one on sheets divided to manufacturer. One sheet for each one. In doing so I took a photo of each one and have them separated into files for each brand. Taking this one step further I am testing a data file for each different type of camera. (worth while, or waste of time I am not sure yet). I take pictures of 4 sides of each camera and set up a data sheet that has all the specifications on it along with the specific camera information. Serial number, condition values etc. One sheet for each camera that can be either stored in the computer in a file, on a flash drive or similar, or saved as a hard copying a loose leaf notebook. This would be valuable to identifying a specific camera similar to the one in the enclosed photo since the previous owner marked on the camera and therefore is very easy to identify without the serial number. It will also show conditions more readily for insurance values in case of loss. It is set up on word publisher but I am sure other programs can work just as well. KennB

I only file all the instruction manual, each camera will have one, original in the case of new or reprinted in case of 2nd hand, recording on the manual date bought and cost. All recipt are attached to each manual.

kennb,
I used to have an excellent programme for recording all the information for each camera. I had recorded just under 100 of my cameras.
Unfortunately, when I switched from IBM to Apple about 8+/- years ago it would no longer work.
Since then I have been searching for another programme that I could use but have found nothing that I could understand. I am not a computer nerd - geek - whatever the experts call themselves now.
I now have over 250 pieces and very few written records other than sales receipts. So my heirs may have some trouble with my collection.

IF YOU HAVE EITHER EXCEL OR I WORKS YOU CAN SET UP A SIMPLE SPREAD SHEET THAT WILL AT LEAST KEEP RECORDS OF THE CAMERA TYPE AND SERIAL NUMBERS. THIS WOULD AT LEAST HELP OUT THE FAMILY LATER AND IF YOU NEED IT FOR NSURANCE USING REPLACEMENT COSTS. I AM APPROACHING 200 PIECES AGAIN AND HAD TO GO BACK AND GET ALL OF THIS INTO A SPREADSHEET FORMAT. THE THING I AM LOOKING AT WITH THE DATA FILES IS TO GET SPECS AND PHYSICAL CONDITION MORE COMPLETELY DOCUMENTED. I JUST AM NOT SURE IF THIS IS REALLY OVERKILL, BUT THINK THAT I SHOULD AT LEAST DOCUMENT MY SLR'S AND "GOOD" DIGITAL CAMERAS THIS WAY. I WOULD NOT GO THROUGH ALL THIS FOR EVERYTHING SINCE THERE ARE SOME THAT REALLY DONT HAVE THE INFORMATION AVAILABLE NOR WOULD IT BE OF ANY IMPORTANCE.

Guess my heirs will have to sort out themselves if they want more details, who knows, they might decide to sell the whole lot so details w'ont be of any use to them except market price. Cheers

If you don't have Microsoft Office, you can use 'Libre Office' which is an open source office suite, a free download and compatible with MS Office. The only thing missing is Publisher. Unfortunately MS haven't released the code for Publisher so it is not compatible with any of the open source desktop publishing programs. If that is no concern, a very good open source desktop publishing program is 'Scribus'
BTW, please don't use all upper case kennb, it comes across as shouting!

I have all my junk in a Microsoft Access Database--but it's been several years since I updated it.

My 'workflow' for Zeiss Ikon cameras: MySQL, every Bestellnummer has its own table, holding all relevant information including source (if the part is owned it will say so, advantage is the enumeration of all parts known to me). Today it is only used for private purposes, but the intention is to publish the data via a website using PHP, MySQL and CSS. If anyone wants to share methodologies, just tell me - I'm working 35+ years at big blue... and accumulated some knowledge about automation, and still learning:-)

Sorry to revive an older thread, but I've just started working on an OpenOffice database. It's rather simplistic, but I think a good start. Here's a screenshot of it. Anybody care to comment on it or willing to share their LibreOffice or OpenOffice database template? I was thinking of making some kind of query for filtering, like have a query field where you could type in the "Brand" and all entries with that Brand would be filtered for review. Anyway, I'm trying to learn this database stuff as I go, so it's been slow in progressing.

I started working on a database just the other day, but I forgot about this thread so my effort was pretty lame. I like Jack's format, it may leave my heirs enough information that they don't just chuck it all in the trash when I'm gone.

I use an Excell spreadsheet, it allows you add fields as you want, it just does the job.
