On ebay......a succinct description......"USED, but mostly works"....reminds me of the late Douglas Adams description of Earth in "The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy"..........."Mostly Harmless",

I like the local descriptions. Usually the country of manufacture is emphasized: "GERMAN camera" "Made in Japan". Even when no info at all is given on model, lens or other mundane aspects.
Best of all last week was a claim of "Original Brand!" from a guy trying to sell a Smena Symbol for more than U.S. $ 150 equivalent.

Belonged to my grandfather. Good for its age. I don't know if it works. I have not tried it. I don't know anything about cameras. A few rust spots. Optical Lens. Needs some cleaning. From estate sale - As Is. I need some cash. Bargain. Complete - Small parts are in envelope. Valuable antique. Family heirloom. CLA 8 years ago. Needs a little TLC. Part of large collection. Ideal for DIY'er. Greatly reduced!!. Was my mother's.
I have purchased over 200 cameras from eBay and have had very few disappointments. No. I am not on their payroll.

The cover all one is "Rare", which can mean it is rare and expensive, or the seller does not know what he is selling . Very popular now is "MEGA RARE" and "Awesome".
The most unhelpful ones are the no description, and photo of the duvet on a bed, with the camera still in the case, in the middle of the shot, type,................... and it was their fathers camera.
The description says they know nothing about the camera......but it starts at twenty nine pounds, about ten pounds more than average for the model.

Just on Ebay, a Gold Leica Olympic, he is honest enough to admit to Fed 2 in brackets, but states it is fitted with the very rare Sonnar F2.8 52mm lens......... (it's an Industar).

One that I particularly dislike and that eBay perpetuates for anything with a bit of dust on it is "VINTAGE".
Vintage refers to a wine of a specific time period. I have so many vintage cameras that I am afraid the Liquor Control Board will try to collect an alcohol tax from me.

Mickey, please don't be so hard on the use of the word "vintage", from an advertising point of view it is brilliant. Vintage means that Hipsters will pay double what something is worth, much like "Lomography." Matty p.s. after many years of studiously not being in any identifiable style group my daughter took great delight in calling me a Hipster today because I was using my Voigtlander Vito B to take some pictures whilst she snapped away with her D3100. How has it come to pass that just being a bit old fashioned is now fashionable.

Vintage means that Hipsters will pay double what something is worth, much like "Lomography." Matty Matty, You are right but brilliant or not it is meaningless and, hence, deceptive. This mutation happens to too many English words these days. They devolve and lose their true meaning and impact. For that I must blame our educational systems and our TV and radio broadcasters and even the print media. All of whom should be the conscientious guardians of our language but instead aid and abet its degeneration. Ain't that a shame? Like, absolutely, y'know, cool. And our new Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau (Water Hole) Uh. Uh. Uh. Can you imagine having to listen to four years of Uh?

Micky, "vintage" is used by collectors and antique dealers, at least in the UK, for something at least 50 years old (antiques are at least 100 years old). So it's not surprising if E*** sellers use it for anything with a bit of rust on, or not obviously digital.

Another Mostly....... An Exakta VX1000 body, excellent cosmetic appearance, "It functions, but mirror mostly remains up"........surely, then, mostly faulty? The seller is being honest with faults.... Stephen.

If I can stall the inevitable I might even become an antique. Are antique old geezers worth anything on eBay? Mickey

Do you have much rust on you Mickey? Yes, Rachel. Quite a lot. I tried sandpaper to no avail. I also have some squeaks and rattles. Some quack told me to try oil for all these problems. No good. But it sure made me run fast. Mickey
