The USA was robbed of a win by the referee today! Worst officiating at this level I have ever seen.

Believe it or not, even I saw that one, and I know NOTHING about soccer! Roy

England were robbed of a victory too - but only because the players were so inept.
From the melee that the USA 'scored' the referee could have picked any one of four or more incidents and awarded a penalty to the USA. I struggle to see anything that the USA should have been penalised for.
In defence of referees in general, footballers are always tugging and holding. Every throw-in or corner/goal kick is claimed by both sides, no matter how ridiculous the claims of one side. Then once taken, there are umpteen things that happen which are punishable. The powers that be - FIFA etc. - put too much pressure on referees by over prescribing what the referee has to do in certain situations. That doesn't make it easy for them, the referees.
That said referees do interpret the laws differently when the ball is in the penalty area. What is given as a foul on the rest of the pitch suddenly isn't in the penalty area. If a decision is made it usually goes to the defending side or else a penalty has to be awarded. I am sure at times referees just 'paint by numbers': they know on any corner or free kick that something will happen in the box, so they can give a free kick or penalty every time and always be right. No doubt this referee did see something happen that gives him justification for the decision he made. It is just that there were several other things he chose to ignore - all of which would have been in the favour of the USA.
The only consolation, if indeed it is, is that it was a wonderful game to watch. A brilliant come back by the USA who looked as though they wanted to win, and indeed, but for the referee, they did win. Compare and contrast with the England performance - over paid players going through the motions.

I STILL have a pile of Nikons. Considering starting a collection of Ricoh SLRs and RFs.

The USA / Slovenia tie was a heart breaker, but we should count our blessings, take the draw, and keep playing hard. The coach showed a lot of dignity by intervening yet accepting the verdict. I doubt that referee will be officiating much more though...
Netherlands is looking fantastic, as usual!

USA were hard done by. England are terrible. At least they paid the USA the compliment of turning up for the game. Their display against Algeria was the worst I've seen by an England team in over 50 years. Looks like Slovenia are through at the moment, but it also looks like qualification will be down to goal differences in the final games. Whatever happens on the field, England's attitude stinks. Even if we manage to hammer Slovenia we won't have deserved to go through on merit over the three matches. At least USA (and Slovenia too, for that matter) have put the effort in.
Funny how 'the easiest group' can turn into 'the group of death' after two matches!

My cousin from Leeds is staying with me and she just had to watch the game.
Fortunately I have more than one room in my house. After a few minutes of the vuvuzela serenade I escaped to that part of the house farthest from the TV (Tely).

P.S. I wonder if a real bugler or trumpeter or french horn virtuoso or any brazen brass player could do anything with those horns from hell if they used a real mouthpiece. M.O

No, no, no. This is getting seriously spooky - history's repeating itself.
France went out without putting up much of a fight. England are left to fight Germany. And the Yanks didn't turn up until the last minute....

ps - I know - but you have to laugh!

Hi John !
I have friends in France and Italy and collueges from many parts of Europe. They are all mourning ( i fear Italy is closed down tomorrow ). The only happy guy is the colluege from Ghana ( who comes to work every day in the local football dress ). Maybe the lady from the nederlands would also be happy, dont know the result. Englang-Germany will be the first football game i would like to watch. Still keeping my fingers crossed for England ! ;D
MIK
PS.: Is USA still in the game ?

John,
It then seems that WW 1 and WW 2 were merely practice rounds for SA-2010.
What incredible foresight.

USA faces Ghana in the first knock-out round. I have high hopes this could be their best finish in a long, long time! (does anyone know they finished third in the first-ever World Cup?)

Good luck against S Korea, Julio. I'll always support a team in sky blue - except Argentina once we've put Germany to bed...
LOL

Thanks and good luck against the Germans! Hope to meet England in the finals now! Our city went crazy today after the match. This is in the Harbor Market today, during the first half of Uruguay-Korea. There was a TV crew around, and a zillion DSLRs of tourists; my XA went unnoticed.

Hi ! Just watched the England-game and I am sorry for you, John. But there is one thing I did not understand. I am not much familiar with football-rules, but if millions of people see definitely a scored goal on TV, why is this circumstance not accepted by the referee MIK
