I think it depends on the camera, (and the observer!) the shape of the pentaprism and top edges of the body. I really like the Olympus OM range and early Pentax in Silver. The Pentax Super A (Program A) looks far better in black. I also prefer the mid range Nikon (FE, FM etc.) in black, but silver is ok . Canon AE-1 etc. in chrome. My current favourite the Yashica FR 1 and its close cousins look far better in black in my opinion.

Hello Truls. Thanks for that. We actually share the same birthday, albeit 21 years apart. Now I am finding out more about Yashica I realise that they were/are a very underrated camera. Some of the different cameras I owned in the past were an Aires SLR with a telephoto attachment that screwed on the front of the standard lens, a Pentacon SLR a grey Rolleiflex 4x4, I owned a Leica 111f for a few hours until I found that the shutter was defective. Wish that I had had it fixed rather than changing it for a Kodak Retina, but that was a very good camera and lasted me many years.
I also owned as a second camera an Olympus Trip which I used in Arctic conditions where a more complicated camera might have stopped working. Also had a new Nikon FE3 which I sold in panic as digital arrived. Wish that I had kept it. Now looking for a good Yashica rangefinder. The only piece of equipment that I have kept for about 56 years is a Zeiss Ikonta exposure meter which is still in good condition and works.

In the 1980's a friend gave me an album of photos. Apparently they were taken by a relative on a 'motor' tour of the Grenoble area of France. Looking at the car, which I cannot identify and the clothes, this would be pre WW1 Having photographed the contents, after contacting them, I sent the album to the Town Hall in Grenoble. Never heard a word from them since! Some of the photos had captions, this one was in Nyons. This picture is about 20% of the original, shows two men admiring two girls walking past. I have found some of the locations on Google Earth, this square has changed, with car parking in the centre, but the arches are still there. This must have been a pretty good camera for its time. Thanks, Barbarian. I have worked on this print in several ways over the years. I think it suits the subject. When I showed the original and this one, presented properly on card at a camera club competition the judge thought that it should have been left alone. Mind you he seemed to prefer 6x4 pretty colour prints of sunsets and flowers straight from the chemist's photolab. Missed the point I think. Might put the original up.

I bought one of these new in 1984, new. It was a modestly priced lens, I was using it on a Canon AE-1. Although there was nothing fancy about it, not particularly sharp or contrasty, there was just something about the images it produced, perhaps smooth is the word.
I wondered if anyone else had experience of this lens. And were Hoya lenses sold under another brand name at the time?

Hello Doug. I am a new member from England, still finding my way around Camera Collector. Sounds like you got a bargain with the FR 1. I have just bought a FR1 from ebay. Clean, excellent working condition with three Tamron Lenses a Contax remote cord and a camera bag. I was very pleased to have paid £49 Sterling for the whole outfit. When it arrived I found that the Yashica 50 mm standard lens was a f1.4. So I am a very happy person.......... With the camera was a copy of a test report on the F1 winder, it was very critical of the way it fitted onto the camera, apparently it tends to move around. I think if I had one I would be cautious about using it. I also have the FR1 system accessory chart, it shows the winder fitting onto the FR, FR1 & FR11 (2) doesn't show anything about the FX-3. Regards Richard.

I have been interested in photography and cameras since I was a boy, about 55 years now. I live in the South of England and am retired.
My first proper camera was a 16 on 127 Zeiss Ikonta folding camera, I then progressed through a Voigtlander Vito B and then far too many cameras, of different mostly 35mm , but also couple of 120 rollfilm cameras to the 80's when I was able to buy a new Minolta 9000 with some nice lenses. At times I have had my own darkroom and early on, with a friend was dabbling in double 8mm cine, making short films, developing our own Russian B&W film and splitting it. I did have some footage of a factory fire shown on BBC news in about 1965., I went straight out and bought a Quarz camera with the proceeds (7 guineas!). I also have been a member of various camera clubs over the years. Had some experience of photography in the Arctic in Winter (long story)
I bought my first modest compact Digital camera about 9 years ago and thought about buying a more ambitious camera, but the rapid obsolescence put me off. I then looked at the new Konica Minolta DSLR bodies coming out, to use with my lenses, but as soon as I did that, Minolta announced that they were dropping out of the market. Then Sony took over, but I had lost patience with the scene and decided to sell off my lenses whilst they still had some value.
Now we come to the recent past. I bought a Canon Powershot SX110 for everyday use a couple of years ago and am pleased with it. I sold the Minolta 9000 body on eBay and started looking at classic manual focus SLR cameras, to use on 'special trips' and bought a very nice clean working Olympus OM-1 , not because I had had one before, but because I like the look and feel of the camera and the quality lenses. I then started off buying some modest aftermarket lenses for it. I then found a very nice Vito B on Ebay and purchased that at a good price for sentimental value.
Now we come to the last few weeks. I was looking on eBay for lenses for the Olympus and came across a local sale of a Yashica FR1 with 'three' lenses all Tamron Adaptall fitted. I knew very little about Yashica but found out that the FR1 was a well regarded camera and put a bid in on it, thinking hat I could use the lenses on the Olympus and sell the rest on.......
What arrived was a very clean working body with a short zoom, a 80-200 and a 135mm Tamron plus a remote and 2x converter and a Yashica 50mm f1.4 standard lens that is worth more than I paid for the whole outfit. So I now am keeping it all to use and retaining the OM 1 minus the cheap lenses. So I looked for a forum where I might find some like minded individuals in respect of Yashica especially. I also have a mint Canon AE-1 that was my brother's that I will never sell. I am interested in technical subjects to photograph rather than people, aircraft, machinery, motorcycles buildings. More to follow!(Hope that is not too much?)
